LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: OJ Simpson had been friends with Robert Kardashian - the attorney and the father of Kim, Kourtney, Khloe, and Rob Kardashian - who also acted as the legal advisor of the NFL star when he was undergoing the ‘trial of the century’.
Following the grisly murders of his second wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ronald Goldman, Simpson was accused of the crime.
He was ordered by the LAPD to turn himself in to the authorities on June 17, 1994. Simpson’s failure to surrender himself ensued in the infamous slow car chase of over 60 miles where the former athlete was driven around by his friend Al Cowling.
Before the infamous car chase in the white Ford Bronco, Simpson left a three-page long ‘suicide note’ that was read to the public by Robert Kardashian at 5 pm of the same day.
That is, however, not the only suicide threat made by Simpson, as it has also been reported that before the legendary Bronco chase, Simpson threatened to kill himself inside the bedroom of the then-13-year-old Kim Kardashian, as per The Mirror.
OJ Simpson threatened to kill himself
After the news broke that OJ Simpson died on April 10, aged 76, an old interview of Robert Kardashian resurfaced on the internet where he detailed the horrifying incident.
Previously the moment of Simpson threatening to kill himself was dramatized in ‘The People v. O. J. Simpson: American Crime Story’, but speculations regarding its authenticity always lingered.
But now, the Kardashian patriarch’s interview has shed light on the chilling incident.
As Simpson was accused of the double murders, Robert found the former Buffalo Bills running back recording "a suicide tape" in the teenage Kim’s bedroom. Simpson was clutching the photographs of Nicole and their two children - Sydney and Justin.
Fortunately, at that time Kim was not at home. In the unearthed interview, Robert can be heard saying, "Then OJ said, 'I'm going to kill myself in this room,' and I said, 'You can't. This is my daughter’s bedroom'."
The high-profile lawyer then recalled telling Simpson, "My little girl Kim sleeps here. I can't have my little girl in this bedroom, and every time I come in here, I'm going to see your body lying in this. You can't do that."
As it turned out to be, Robert was able to talk Simpson out of his suicidal thoughts. The former athlete, nevertheless, was subjected to an eleven-month-long trial in the murder case. Ultimately, in the end, he was acquitted of the two murders by a jury.
OJ Simpson left a 'suicide note'
Simpson not only attempted to record a “suicide tape” but also penned a three-page long note before the Bronco chase.
Dedicating the letter to 'Whom It May Concern', Simpson wrote, “First, everyone understand. I have nothing to do with Nicole's murder. I loved her; always have and always will. If we had a problem, it's because I loved her so much," per CNN.
He continued to shed light on his relationship with Nicole, saying, “Recently, we came to the understanding that for now we were not right for each other, at least for now. Despite our love, we were different and that's why we mutually agreed to go our separate ways.”
He explained, “It was tough splitting for a second time, but we both knew it was for the best. Inside, I had no doubt that in the future we would be close friends or more. Unlike what has been written in the press, Nicole and I had a great relationship for most of our lives together. Like all long-term relationships, we had a few downs and ups.”
Simpson then went on to pay tributes to his friends before writing, “I think of my life and feel I've done most of the right things. So why do I end up like this? I can't go on. No matter what the outcome, people will look and point. I can't take that. I can't subject my children to that. This way, they can move on and go on with their lives.”
He also nodded to the Goldman family, writing, “I'm sorry for the Goldman family. I know how much it hurts,” before adding, “Nicole and I had a good life together. All this press talk about a rocky relationship was no more that what every long-term relationship experiences. All her friends will confirm that I have been totally loving and understanding of what she's been going through.”
He noted, “At times, I have felt like a battered husband or boyfriend, but I loved her; make that clear to everyone. And I would take whatever it took to make it work.”
“Don't feel sorry for me. I've had a great life, great friends. Please think of the real O.J. and not this lost person,” wrote the star before concluding, “Thanks for making my life special. I hope I helped yours.”
He signed the letter, writing, “Peace and love, O.J.” and added a smiley emoji.
