BASTROP, TEXAS: Pete Buttigieg responded to allegations made by Elon Musk who claimed that FEMA was hindering SpaceX’s efforts to deliver Starlink terminals and supplies to areas devastated by Hurricane Helene.

The Transportation Secretary took to Musk's X platform to set the record straight, denying that federal agencies were blocking rescue operations and refuting Musk’s claims of airspace shutdowns in North Carolina.

Elon Musk’s allegations of government incompetence

Responding to Elon Musk's claims, Buttigieg stated, “No one is shutting down the airspace, and the FAA doesn’t block legitimate rescue and recovery flights."

He firmly dismissed the allegations while inviting Musk to reach out directly if he was experiencing issues, saying, “If you’re encountering a problem, give me a call.”

The exchange between the two began after Musk who has been personally involved in relief efforts following Hurricane Helene, posted a screengrab on X showing a conversation where someone claimed that airspace had been “shut down” and the FAA was “limiting flights.”

The SpaceX CEO who has been mobilizing resources, including Starlink satellite terminals, to support areas impacted by the storm, criticized the government’s response to the situation.

“SpaceX engineers are trying to deliver Starlink terminals & supplies to devastated areas in North Carolina right now, and @FEMA is both failing to help AND won’t let others help. This is unconscionable!!” wrote Musk.

He went on to slam President Biden’s administration, describing the situation as “staggering” incompetence.

Hurricane Helene's devastation and relief efforts

Hurricane Helene has wreaked havoc along the southeastern coast, causing historic flooding and a storm surge exceeding 15 feet in some areas.

The disaster has triggered widespread humanitarian efforts, with donations pouring in and organizations mobilizing to assist those affected.

Musk, through his company SpaceX, has been actively involved in relief efforts, using Starlink technology to provide internet connectivity to affected regions.

His involvement has made him a visible figure in the recovery of the ongoing disaster but his latest allegations have sparked controversy, according to Raw Story.

Elon Musk’s response to Pete Buttigieg

Following Pete Buttigieg’s public reply, Elon Musk quickly responded, claiming to have heard “hundreds” of similar stories regarding government interference in relief efforts.

He then expressed a desire to address the matter further as he tweeted, “I’d really like to chat with you. I’ll follow you—just DM me your number.”

Hours later, the tech billioinaire posted a follow-up, thanking Buttigieg for reaching out. “Thanks for the call. Hopefully, we can resolve this soon."

In a separate reply, Musk wrote, "Thanks for helping simplify the FAA NOTAM. Support flights are now underway. Much appreciated."
