Jason Kelce mocked for saying he’ll have ‘failed as a dad’ if daughters follow Harrison Butker’s advice
CLEVELAND, OHIO: Harrison Butker's controversial commencement speech continues to make headlines. Now Jason Kelce, the recently retired Philadelphia Eagles player, has revealed his and wife, Kylie's opinion on the matter.
The Kansas City Chiefs kicker had kicked up a storm with his remarks on women during his commencement speech at Benedictine College's graduation ceremony on May 11.
What did Jason Kelce say about Harrison Butker's speech?
During a new episode of the 'New Heights' podcast with brother Travis Kelce, Jason, 36, weighed in on the 28-year-old Chiefs kicker's speech.
In his speech at Benedictine College, a Catholic school, Butker had spoken about various "diabolical lies told to women" on topics including abortion, in vitro fertilization (IVF) and surrogacy.
The father of three girls, Jason, said he's been asked by "so many people" what he would do if his daughters "had to sit there and listen to somebody tell them after they just earned a degree, that they should just align to be homemakers".
"I would say, if my daughters listen to anybody tell them what to do, that they should be homemakers, then I've failed as a dad," the former Eagles center told his brother, Travis, 34, who has been teammates with Butker since 2017.
Jason continued, "I don't care who's talking to them. If you let somebody up on a stage tell you that you can't do that, and then you're like, 'Oh, f**k guess I won't go be a Fortune 500 CEO,' like, you weren't going to make it."
"If you don't like what somebody says, all you've got to do is say, oh, that guy is a f***ing idiot, and then you move on," Jason advised, adding that he wasn't sure what "the big fuss" was about Butker's speech.
Jason said, "I mean, I get what the fuss is about because I know that certain of these groups have been, persecuted against for a long period in this country, and women in particular," sharing that his wife, Kylie Kelce, was "a little bit frustrated with some of the comments" Butker made.
During the podcast, Travis also discussed his thoughts on Butker's statement, praising the kicker to be a "great person and a great teammate".
"He’s treated friends and family that I’ve introduced to him with nothing but respect and kindness. And that’s how he treats everyone. When it comes down to his views and what he said at [Benedictine's] commencement speech, those are his," the tight end continued.
Travis added, "I can’t say I agree with the majority of it or just about any of it outside of just him loving his family and his kids. And I don’t think that I should judge him by his views, especially his religious views, of how to go about life, that’s just not who I am."
Internet reacts to Jason Kelce's comments on Harrison Butker's speech
Social media users, though, didn't approve of what Jason had to say.
A Facebook user said, "Listen to the whole speech. He did NOT tell anyone how to live. He honored his wife for supporting him. He celebrated his Catholic faith. Stop trying to make this political!"
A user said, "I love him! BTW he never told anyone what to do! He honored and respects his wife and what she does for his family. This is a clear example how the media social media spins things. No shame!"
Another user said, "I listened to his speech. It certainly harkened back to an earlier era. I didn't get the impression that the husband rules. maybe that was inferred. If you meet a man holding these beliefs, just move on. Easier said than done sometimes. Women can find themselves in bad situations."
A user said, "If someone had asked me that question about what I would tell my kids, I would tell them to listen to the speech first and foremost! All these sound bites and talking points don't portray the actual speech. Most of these sound bites are taken out of context, and if you read the whole entire speech, much of what is being touted he said, is not actually what he said. But that's par for the course, everybody wants to sound bite and a debate and to play the victim."
A user said, "Ha. He shared his journey, his faith, and what's most important to him. how can you be so offended. Actually, that's funny."
Another user said," l encourage people to read his entire speech. It was clear that it was going to picked apart and taken out of context."
While a user said, "I dont agree with Jason."
