LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Dwyane Wade, the retired NBA legend, was thrilled to learn that he was nominated for Oscars for his documentary ‘The Barber Of Little Rock.'

However, his family did not share his excitement right away when he shared the news of his achievement, especially his 16-year-old daughter.

How did Dwyane Wade's family react to the news of his Oscars nomination?

In an interview with People, Wade, 42, said that his family’s initial response was lukewarm.

They only said, “That’s cool.” However, his daughter Zaya, 16, changed her mind after she found out more about the documentary.

Wade said that he was having dinner with Zaya when he decided to share the news with her.

He said to her, “Oh, let me share. Let’s have a little cheers moment. Share some news that your dad is nominated for an Oscar with his production company,” to which Zaya was like, “Really? For what?”

What is Dwyane Wade's ‘The Barber Of Little Rock’ all about?

Wade told Zaya that the documentary was about ‘The Barber Of Little Rock’, a short film that tells the story of Brandon Jones, a barber who provides free haircuts and mentorship to young Black men in Little Rock, Arkansas.

Zaya said, “Wait a minute. My friends have been talking about it. They’ve watched it, they’ve seen it.”

Wade said that it was a "cool moment" to let his daughter know that he was involved in telling and highlighting "meaningful and impactful stories."

Wade shares two other children with his ex-wife Siovaughn Funches: Zaire, 22, and Xavier, 10.

He also has a daughter, Kaavia James, five, with his current wife, actress Gabrielle Union. He is the legal guardian of his nephew, Dahveon Morris, 21.

How did Kobe Bryant inspire Dwyane Wade to win an Oscar?

Wade also revealed to Jimmy Felon on 'The Tonight Show' with Jimmy Fallon in January, that he was motivated to win an Oscar by his late friend and fellow NFL star Kobe Bryant, who won an Oscar in 2018 for his animated short film ‘Dear Basketball.’

Wade told Felon that he was inspired by Bryant’s achievement and wanted to follow in his footsteps.



 

He said, “When he won that, as a guy who just retired, I was sitting there knowing that my time was coming and I was like, 'Well, I guess I got to go win an Oscar now."

"I mean, I’ll try not to get left too far behind in all that with the accolades, the championships, the gold medals and all the things,” he continued, adding, “I was like, 'I guess I need to win an Oscar.”
