Reasons why Angelina Jolie doesn't let Hollywood stylists near her children
Angelina Jolie keeps Hollywood stylists away from her children so they may develop their own identities
Angelina Jolie, who has recently launched her fashion brand Atelier Jolie does not let her children get styled by high profile Hollywood stylists. The multi-hyphenated star believes dressing is an extension of self-exploration and helps in developing one's identity.
Angelina Jolie doesn't 'work regularly with a stylist'
During her December 2023 interview with Wall Street Journal, Angelina Jolie discussed the philosophy behind her fashion and the driving force behind her children's styling. She shared, “You know, I don’t work regularly with a stylist; I don’t like the idea of just somebody putting clothes on me or on my kids. I don’t think they like the idea of being styled by someone else."
Angelina Jolie wants to know who her children are
The 'Mr & Mrs Smith' star continued to stress on the point that clothing is just a vehicle of self-exploration and that she wants to know her children, saying, “So much of clothing is identity and if someone else is styling you and if someone else is dictating who you are and what you wear… Especially as a mother, I want to know who my children are."
Angelina Jolie encourages her children to dress freely
In the same interview, she recounted the challenge she threw towards her children as they were preparing to attend 'Eternals' premiere in 2021. Giving them a handful of second-hand clothing, she asked her children to dress themselves. Jolie recalled, "That was just an experiment in, 'Here's some old clothes, here's some vintage, here's some things you can cut up - you can do it all these different ways.'" She further recalled asking them, "Who are you? What do you want?" not "Who does the world expect you to be as Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt's kids?" or "What current fashion trends might satisfy the image people have painted of you?"
Angelina Jolie is happy her children 'explore themselves' with fashion
Jolie's children attended the UK premiere of 'Eternals' where they had fun in dressing themselves up. Jolie gushed about their styling while opening up to Entertainment Tonight, “I'm happy that they're able to have some fun with it and not take it too seriously and start to explore themselves even with their fashion.” Time and again, Jolie has propounded the theory that styling is just a part of exploring oneself.
Angelina Jolie doesn't want her children to conform to expectations
Jolie explained in a Wall Street Journal interview the very reason why she doesn't want her children to conform to the expectations of society, but rather to venture out on a path of self-exploration where they can differentiate between their likes and dislikes. She shared, “I want to put things in front of them that help them question or break the box or say ‘I don’t like this’ or ‘This doesn’t feel right.’ So you’re always trying to just put different options in front of them and see where it takes them.”
Angelina Jolie doesn't tell her children how to dress
As a part of her thoughtful parenting, Jolie allows her children to choose their dresses. In September 2023, Jolie shared with Vogue, “I don’t tell the kids how to dress. Even when they were little, I just put things in front of them,” before adding, “[We] live in our clothes, it is so much a part of who we are, and something that’s important to explore, especially for young people.”
