WASHINGTON, DC: South Carolina Republican Senator Tim Scott faced scrutiny on Sunday when ABC News' 'This Week' host Jonathan Karl fact-checked his assertion that violent crime has surged under President Joe Biden.

During the interview, Karl challenged Scott's statement, pointing to recent statistics showing a decrease in violent crime and murder rates over the past year.

Scott, known for his outspoken views, pivoted from discussing the Supreme Court's decision on bump stocks to asserting, "Under Joe Biden, we've seen the greatest increase in violent crime in my lifetime." However, Karl promptly corrected him, stating, "Actually, Senator, as you probably know, the latest stats on violent crime and on the murder rate, they're actually down this past year."

Despite the fact-check, Scott doubled down on his claims, emphasizing that neighborhoods he knows well have "never been ravaged [more]" than under Biden's presidency. The exchange between Scott and Karl underscores a broader debate on crime rates and the responsibilities of the current administration. Republicans have criticized Biden, attributing high crime levels to his policies, while the president contends that violent crime has declined during his tenure.

A recent analysis by Poynter, based on FBI data, corroborates Biden's assertion of a decreasing trend in violent crime. Jeff Asher of AH Datalytics, compiling the data, confirmed that the violent crime rate, encompassing homicide, rape, robbery, and aggravated assault, has steadily decreased since its peak in 1991. The 2022 rate of approximately 370 incidents per 100,000 residents marks one of the lowest levels in five decades, aligning with previous lows recorded in 2014 and 2019.

Criminologists, including Northeastern University's James Alan Fox, have supported these findings, noting that despite temporary spikes during the COVID-19 pandemic, overall "homicide rates have declined."

A Pew Research Center report from April 2024 indicates a growing public concern over crime reduction, with 58 percent of Americans prioritizing it as a top issue for the president and Congress to address. This sentiment reflects ongoing challenges in accurately measuring crime rates, compounded by data collection limitations from key agencies like the FBI and the Bureau of Justice Statistics.

Despite these complexities, long-term trends indicate significant reductions in both violent and property crime rates since the 1990s across the United States. The FBI data highlights a notable 49 percent decline in violent crime between 1993 and 2022, with substantial decreases in robbery (-74 percent), aggravated assault (-39 percent), and murder/nonnegligent manslaughter (-34 percent).

Netizens react to crime statistics under Joe Biden's presidency

A user tweeted, "Violent crimes rates lowered under Biden. Now that Trump and associates are also all arrested and serving time, crime rate in general is also lower."

Another added, "We all know by now that crime data has been incomplete for the last couple of years."

One user claimed, "Nice try, liars. We all know large blue cities are not reporting their crime stats We all know that blue cities have DAs refusing to prosecute violent criminals. Keep with your lies. We all see it."

"He is so desperate and whiney," mocked a user.

"This “Django Stephen” just needs to STFU," read a tweet.

"MORE MAGA SCUM LIES," penned a user.
