WASHINGTON, DC: Rudy Giuliani faced brutal backlash after his attorney claimed that he would face the "civil equivalent of the death penalty" if the two Georgia election workers who are suing him for defamation receive the damages they are seeking.

Ruby Freeman and Shaye Moss filed a lawsuit against Giuliani in December 2021, alleging that he "orchestrated a sustained smear campaign" against the two election workers after he propagated an unfounded far-right conspiracy theory that connected election workers to irregularities.

Following the filing, US District Judge Beryl Howell declared Giuliani liable for defamation in August after he declined to contest the lawsuit's main allegations.

The mother-and-daughter duo is now seeking damages between $15.5 and $43 million from Giuliani, according to court documents.

Their attorney made the preliminary disclosure of the damages request on Monday, December 11 at the start of a jury trial dedicated to determining the right amount of compensation for the damages the election workers endured.

On the other hand, Giuliani, girding for an eye-popping financial verdict, has been pleading with the jury to see if Freeman and Moss' pain could truly be directly linked to him.

What did Rudy Giuliani’s attorney say during the statement?

During his brief opening remarks, Giuliani's attorney Joseph Sibley quickly admitted that his client was “wrong” to have accused Freeman and Moss of fraud.

“There’s really no question that these plaintiffs were harmed,” Sibley said, calling them “good people.” “They didn’t deserve what happened to them,” he added.

Sibley described the damages the two are claiming as "truly incredible," and cleared that the main thrust of Giuliani's defense will be to argue that Giuliani, Trump, or Trump campaign officials were not solely to blame for the chaos and fear that descended upon them in December 2020.

“What happened to them is because of a controversy that involved a lot of people. It wasn’t just Mr. Giuliani,” Sibley said during his six-minute opening.

He also claimed that the millions of dollars Freeman and Moss are seeking would be the “civil equivalent of the death penalty.”

“It would be the end of Mr Giuliani,” Sibley added.

However, Giuliani told reporters outside the courthouse on Monday that he did not regret telling lies and that he had "told the truth" about Freeman and Moss.

“When I testify, you’ll get the whole story, and it will be definitively clear what I said was true,” he said, according to NBC News.

Internet reacts to Rudy Giuliani's lawyer Joseph Sibley’s remarks

After Joseph Sibley’s remarks surfaced on social media, many users slammed Rudy Giuliani for the pleas. “Too bad so sad. He deserves every bit of misery,” one user blasted.

“Considering he very nearly caused the ACTUAL ending of their lives, this is more than reasonable to me. If the man is too poor to avoid hair dye, that's justice,” the second user slammed.

“Well, if so, good riddance. He should have thought about that before he defamed Ruby Freeman and Shaye Moss," the third user attacked.

“Rudy's lawyers also realize if the penalty ruins Giuliani, they're not getting paid. [sad trombone],” the fourth user asserted, while the fifth one wrote, “But, but, his boss is supposedly is a billionaire. Trump could pay the $43 million for him easy, right? 🤨”

“Are we supposed to feel sympathy for the man who almost got two women killed?” one more said.
