Seth Meyers accuses Trump of 'coup attempt', slams Republicans for impeaching Biden to give him ammunition
MANHATTAN, NEW YORK CITY: Late-night host Seth Meyers mocked Congressional Republicans by comparing Trump's criminal cases with the impeachment inquiry into Joe Biden despite the absence of any evidence of a crime on December 15's episode.
Meyers' commentary suggested a retaliatory motive by Republicans due to Democrats' previous impeachments of Trump, adding context to the political dynamics at play.
Meyers slams Republican 'nutballs' for their absurd statements
“Trump and his goons are finally facing consequences for their shameless lying, which explains why Republicans decided to waste Congress’s precious time on a sham impeachment inquiry into Joe Biden,” said Meyers.
He continued, "It has nothing to do with the facts, they just want to give Trump political ammunition to use against Biden".
“And that’s not just me saying that,” he added, “That’s coming from Trump and his GOP allies.”
Meyers highlighted Republican Troy Nehls, who expressed the desire to provide Trump with ammunition to retaliate against Biden during the campaign trail.
Meyers likely used this statement to underscore the political motivations behind the Republican vote for an impeachment inquiry.
He said, "This impeachment inquiry is such a scam, even news anchors are openly laughing in the faces of Republicans overseeing the investigation," highlighting moments where news anchors openly laughed at Republicans overseeing the investigation.
Jake Tapper from CNN laughed at Kentucky Republican James Comer, who suggested that the Biden Justice Department's indictment of Hunter was a conspiracy to protect him.
Even Fox News's Steve Doocy acknowledged that Republicans had not demonstrated any evidence of illegal actions by Joe Biden.
He referred to the lack of evidence or "suspense" as "these guys all sound like old-time radio announcers at the end of a 1940s detective show".
He then humorously criticized congressional Republicans for pursuing the impeachment inquiry, describing them as "nutballs" who don't recognize the absurdity of their statements.
Meyers pointed out the irony that after years of obsession over Hunter Biden, he has indeed been indicted - under the Biden administration.
Trump reportedly 'paid hush money to a porn star'
The host then moved on with the segment comparing Trump's criminal cases to the impeachment motive.
"So, Republicans can't specify what crime they're investigating and can't show us any evidence to link Joe Biden to that nonexistent crime. Let's compare that to the criminal charges against Trump, which are comparatively straightforward".
In Meyers' words, "He fomented a violent insurrection, orchestrated a coup attempt, stole classified documents.....Paid hush money to a porn star".
"And it's crazy that the case has the least to worry about would have ended anyone else's political career immediately. I don't know which detail of that case is more hilarious --that Trump reportedly asked her to spank him with a Forbes magazine or that he made her watch "Shark Week" with him, or that she called it 'the worst 90 seconds of my life'".
Meyers highlighted that Trump, attempting to escape his Jan 6 criminal case, has asserted immunity from prosecution as a former president. Special Counsel Jack Smith has challenged this claim, taking the matter directly to the Supreme Court for their consideration.
He said, "Trump is just trying to delay the trial as long as possible, and Jack Smith is calling his bluff. And Trump is not a good bluffer. He's the kind of guy who, if he was playing poker, would slowly show his hand in hopes people would give him money before seeing the whole thing".
The Internet calls the accusations 'toothless'
'Late Night' viewers left their comments underneath the YouTube video of the show.
Some of the comments read, "I love it how he keeps calling it what it was…a coup attempt!"
"Comer's accusations are so toothless it couldn't even bite through a bowl of porridge," said another.
One praised the show and Meyers' humour, saying, "This show is in a chaotic spiral and I'm 10000% here for it".
In the end of the news segment, Meyers said, "They actually wrote in a legal filing that hearing this sooner rather than later would ruin Christmas and compared the special counsel to the Grinch".
