FRANKFORT, KENTUCKY: A child from Frankfort at Louisville hospital was in a dangerous condition after nearly being starved by his mother.

According to Fox 56 News, a social worker, who received a complaint from Norton Children’s Hospital in Louisville, called Frankfort police about the condition of 39-year-old Sheena Wood’s son, who was a patient.

Sheena Wood, 39, has been charged with first-degree assault, first-degree criminal abuse, and endangering the welfare of a minor.

What did Sheena Wood do to the child?

Wood's son had been admitted to the hospital on January 11 for bedsore. As doctors treated him, they realized he was suffering from malnutrition and may have developed refeeding syndrome.

For those who are not versed, according to the National Institute of Health, the syndrome is defined as “potentially fatal shifts in fluids and electrolytes that may occur in malnourished patients receiving artificial refeeding.” The NIH said it can occur in patients with “negligible food intake” for more than five days.

An arrest review as cited by Law and Crime states Wood caused “cruel punishment and torture” to her son when the lack of food she gave him caused the boy to “slowly starve.”

Police continue their investigation

She exhibited “extreme indifference to the value of human life,” the citation added. The report even added that Wood allegedly “failed or refused to exercise reasonable diligence” as a parent of a child to prevent him from becoming neglected.

Wood was taken into custody by Frankfort police on Monday, January 29, and released on a $25,000 bond to the Franklin County Regional Jail. A spokesman for the department told the portal that the incident remains under investigation and declined further comment.

Wood has a court hearing scheduled for February 6.
