ATHENS, GEORGIA: The tragic murder of 22-year-old nursing student Laken Riley in Georgia has become the latest battleground for political blame, with former President Donald Trump squarely pointing the finger at President Joe Biden's immigration policies.

Riley, a student at the University of Georgia, vanished last week while out for a jog, prompting her roommate to report her missing. Tragically, her lifeless body was discovered days later near Lake Herrick. The suspect, 26-year-old Jose Antonio Ibarra, an illegal Venezuelan immigrant, was swiftly charged with her murder.

Trump wasted no time in addressing the tragedy, lambasting Biden for what he described as lax policies at the southern border that facilitated Ibarra's presence in the country. In a scathing post on his Truth Social platform, Trump denounced Biden's handling of immigration, labeling it a "Border INVASION" that is "destroying our country and killing our citizens."

"Crooked Joe Biden's Border INVASION is destroying our country and killing our citizens!" Trump fumed on Monday, February 26.

"The horrible murder of 22-year-old Laken Riley at the University of Georgia should have NEVER happened!" he continued and added, "The monster who took her life illegally entered our Country in 2022…and then was released AGAIN by Radical Democrats in New York after injuring a CHILD!!"

Riley's grieving family, in a statement to Fox News, implored for prayers and privacy as they grapple with the loss of their beloved daughter. Meanwhile, Ibarra remains incarcerated at the Athens-Clarke County Jail, facing a litany of charges including murder, aggravated assault, and kidnapping.

The tragedy has reignited the fiery debate over immigration, with Republicans seizing on Riley's murder as evidence of the dangers posed by illegal immigration. Trump, in particular, has vowed to enact the "largest deportation" in US history if re-elected in 2024, positioning himself as the antidote to what he perceives as Biden's failures on border security.

However, Biden is not without his own response to the crisis. Reports suggest that the administration is mulling executive actions to tighten asylum standards and expedite deportations, a move that has drawn criticism from Democrats and progressives who liken it to Trump-era policies.

As both leaders gear up for visits to the southern border in Texas this week, the stark divide over immigration policy is laid bare. Biden's planned visit to Brownsville, where he will meet with Border Patrol agents and local leaders. On the other hand, Trump is scheduled to appear in Eagle Pass, approximately 300 miles away.

"When I am your President, we will immediately Seal the Border, Stop the Invasion, and on Day One, we will begin the largest deportation operation of illegal CRIMINALS in American History!" Trump added in his post. "May God Bless Laken Riley and her family!!! Our prayers are with you!"

Under Biden's watch, the influx of migrants crossing the southern border has reached unprecedented levels, with December alone seeing a new high of 301,983 crossings reported by Customs and Border Protection. This number reportedly excludes the "gotaways" – those who successfully evaded detection by border officials.

The surge has fueled discontent among conservatives and propelled immigration to the forefront of the political discourse.

Social media reactions

Social media was inundated with reactions after Trump offered his take on the tragedy. Some pushed back against the former president.

"Should have signed the Border Bill," one posted on X.

"There is that false equivalence we were not looking for," another wrote.

"Donald Trump is literally responsible for Riley’s death. Trump ordered Republicans to say no on border bill," a comment read.

Others echoed Trump's sentiments.

"We continue to support your efforts to expose what's happening to our country at the southern border," one commented.

"Thank you, Trump! They all need to go back," another gushed.

"Trump is on the right side when it comes to history!" someone else chimed in.
