LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: On a recent episode of 'The Late Show', Stephen Colbert took aim at Republican JD Vance's performance during the vice presidential debate, cleverly turning Vance's own tactics against him to mock GOP nominee Donald Trump.

Colbert highlighted how Vance attempted to redirect blame for controversial immigration policies, specifically child separation, onto Kamala Harris, declaring, “The real family separation policy in this country is unfortunately Kamala Harris’ wide open southern border.”

Stephen Colbert was quick to counter this argument, quipping, “Nice try! The real cheating on his wife with a porn star is Kamala Harris’ immigration policy,” a jab at Trump’s alleged affair while Melania Trump had just given birth to their son, Barron.

He further remarked, “Tragically her southern border is the one with the mushroom penis,” delivering his punchline with trademark humor.

In his monologue, Colbert described the debate as “the most Vice important night of the entire campaign” and likened it to “having Thanksgiving with your most nervous uncle and your smuggest nephew.”

He reflected on the debate atmosphere, remarking on Vance’s attempts to downplay the January 6 insurrection, stating, “It’s really rich for Democratic leaders to say that Donald Trump is a unique threat to democracy when he peacefully gave over power on January the 20th.”

Colbert critiques moderators and Vance's vague rhetoric while exposing debate discomfort

Colbert also critiqued the moderators’ approach, noting, “The moderators are not allowed to fact check. Instead, CBS provided a QR code that supposedly directed viewers to the CBS News website with fact checks.”

He added, “If you want to fact check if that’s what I really think just scan this QR code right there.”

Vance's vague and patriotic rhetoric drew Colbert's ire as well, with the host joking about the absurdity of Vance’s response to questions on gun violence, saying, “We have to increase security in our schools… and unfortunately we have to put a wizard by the door who presents all who wish to enter.”

Colbert wrapped up the segment by emphasizing the sheer discomfort of the night, saying, “In the end, it was 90 minutes of constant talk that made one thing clear: it was unpleasant, awkward, and thankfully you only have to do it once every four years.”

Ultimately, Colbert's sharp wit highlighted the absurdities of political discourse while cleverly flipping Vance's tactics back at Trump, delivering both humor and pointed critique in one entertaining package.
