FORT MYERS, FLORIDA: A suspected bank robber in Florida, identified as 36-year-old Sterling Ramon Alavache, met a fatal end during a tense standoff with law enforcement on Tuesday, February 6.

Lee County Sheriff's Office reported that Alavache, with a lengthy criminal history including drug trafficking, aggravated assault, and carrying concealed firearms across states, had taken two hostages inside a Bank of America branch near Bell Tower Shops in Fort Myers.

Timeline of Sterling Ramon Alavache's bank robbery

The incident unfolded just after 11 am when deputies responded to a distress call about a bank robber holding multiple hostages. Lee County Sheriff Carmine Marceno, addressing reporters alongside the FBI, revealed that as deputies rushed into the bank to secure the area, numerous bystanders fled the scene.

Sheriff Marceno described the intense confrontation with the armed suspect, "Quickly, we were face-to-face with a male suspect who was armed with a knife. He also claimed he had a bomb," as per Fox.

Moreover, Alavache, holding two hostages, initiated negotiations with authorities. At a critical moment, he allegedly placed one of the hostages in a headlock, threatening her life with a knife to her throat.

Fearing for the hostage's safety, a SWAT sniper decisively acted and shot Alavache, bringing the standoff to an end. Both hostages emerged unharmed from the incident. In the aftermath, the SWAT sniper responsible for neutralizing the threat will be placed on administrative leave pending a thorough investigation into the shooting.

Sheriff Marceno expressed the gravity of the situation, stating on social media, "It's a sad day when innocent lives are placed in jeopardy due to the senseless acts of others." He further acknowledged the difficult decision faced by his team to neutralize an active threat during a highly volatile situation. "Let this serve as a reminder of how important it is to remain vigilant. I'm beyond grateful none of the victims or my team were injured today."
