Stevie Nicks reveals Fleetwood Mac would have broken up if she hadn't got abortion
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Stevie Nicks has opened up about her abortion over 40 years ago, revealing that Fleetwood Mac could have disbanded if she had decided to continue with the pregnancy.
In a candid interview with Rolling Stone, the 76-year-old singer shared her experience of falling pregnant by her then-partner, Don Henley, while using an IUD for protection.
Stevie Nicks discusses unintended pregnancy with Don Henley, revealing her fears about motherhood
Nicks stated, "Well, mine really wasn’t let out to the public by me - it was let out to the public by Don Henley." She recounted how Henley apologized for discussing their relationship, which led to the revelation of her pregnancy.
According to Daily Mail, reflecting on the situation, Nicks expressed that she realized that having a child would conflict with her commitment to the band.
"Now, what the hell am I going to do? I cannot have a child," she explained, emphasizing her reluctance to have a nanny raise her baby.
She recognized that touring with a child would be impossible, saying, "I wouldn’t say I just need nine months. I would say I need a couple of years, and that would break up the band, period."
When asked if she believed Fleetwood Mac would have been "done" had she gone through with the pregnancy, she replied, "Done. And that would’ve been sad."
Nicks acknowledged the challenges of balancing motherhood with her career, noting, "I wouldn’t have even known what to do with that responsibility."
Stevie Nicks reiterates her choice not to have children
This isn’t the first time Nicks has discussed her decision; in 2020, she told The Guardian, "There's just no way that I could have had a child then, working as hard as we worked constantly."
She emphasized the importance of their music, stating, "I knew that the music we were going to bring to the world was going to heal so many people's hearts."
Ultimately, Nicks expressed no regrets about her choice, reinforcing her dedication to her music and career. She concluded, "If Christine [McVie] was in this room with me right now, she'd tell you that we both made the decision not to have kids and instead follow our musical muse around the world."
