Susan Sarandon reveals her 'projects were pulled' from Hollywood over remarks at pro-Palestine rally
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Actress Susan Sarandon opened up about the consequences of her remarks at a pro-Palestine rally last year in an interview with The Times published on Sunday, November 10.
The 78-year-old activist had participated in a protest against Israel's ongoing assault on Palestine in November 2023 on the streets of New York, where she landed in hot water over a specific comment that undermined the tribulations faced by the Jewish community in the country.
A lot of people were “afraid of being Jewish at this time," Sarandon had then stated, claiming that they "are getting a taste of what it feels like to be a Muslim in this country, so often subjected to violence.”

Susan Sarandon apologizes for her comment
According to the Independent, Susan Sarandon later issued a public apology for her statement, noting that the phrasing was a "terrible mistake" that failed to communicate her concern over antisemitic attacks.
“This phrasing was a terrible mistake, as it implies that until recently Jews have been strangers to persecution when the opposite is true,” she said at the time. “As we all know, from centuries of oppression and genocide in Europe to the Tree of Life shooting in Pittsburgh, PA, Jews have long been familiar with discrimination and religious violence which continues to this day."
“I deeply regret diminishing this reality and hurting people with this comment. It was my intent to show solidarity to the struggle against bigotry of all kinds, and I am sorry I failed to do so.”
The fallout of Susan Sarandon's remark over the year
In a recent interview, the veteran Hollywood star spoke out about being outcasted from her professional community over the year following the incident. The controversy that ensued over her remark led to her being dropped by her agent and not getting roles in movies created by mainstream studios.
"I was dropped by my agency, my projects were pulled. I’ve been used as an example of what not to do if you want to continue to work," she shared.
Sarandon noted that she was not alone in being ostracized by Hollywood, saying, "There are so many people out of work right now (since) November of last year… who have lost their jobs as custodians, as writers, as painters, as people working in the cafeteria, substitute teachers who have been fired because they tweeted something, or liked a tweet, or asked for a ceasefire."
When asked if she expected to be offered prominent movie roles in the future, Sarandon replied, "I don't know. (Not) anything in Hollywood."

Sarandon has not discontinued to advocate for a ceasefire in Palestine, reported the Independent.
Since Israel launched an all-out assault on the country following the infamous Hamas attack of October 7, 2023, 40,000 Palestinians have been killed, with nearly 70% of them being women and children, according to the UN human rights office.
