What is Blastocystis hominis?
According to the Mayo Clinic, Blastocystis hominis is a microscopic parasite that can live in the digestive tract. This parasite can be transmitted through food or water or by contact with human or animal feces.
The parasite typically lives in the tract without causing harm. However, some individuals may experience varying symptoms like abdominal pain, nausea, bloating, diarrhea, fatigue, weight loss, and loss of appetite.
Mayo Clinic states that even if blastocystis is found in the patient's feces, it might not be causing the person symptoms. The likely cause of illness is said to be through another food- or water-borne organism.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states that the organism can be found in well and sick individuals.
Tamron Hall says she had 'severe symptoms' of Blastocystis hominis
Hall talked about how the disease is not rare as she said, "I had a parasite inside of me and apparently I’m not alone cause it’s not that uncommon…so don’t judge me. Don’t be like, ‘What dirty kitchen did Tamron Hall eat in?'"
