Teen describes 'trauma' at sentencing of his mother's killer who dumped her body in storage bin
BRONX, NEW YORK: Omir Walcott, a 14-year-old teenager, is presently grappling with consecutive traumas following the tragic demise of his mother, Nisaa Walcott, in 2022. In a distressing turn of events, Nisaa fell victim to a reprehensible plot orchestrated by her cousin, driven by financial motives.
The perpetrator, Khalid Barrow, went even further by impersonating Nisaa. He engaged in text conversations with other family members, especially impacting Walcott's grieving teenage son.
The distressing situation took a toll on Omir, who later recounted the heart-wrenching details of his mother's fate in the courtroom.
Following Nissa's demise, her 14-year-old son was profoundly affected and detailed the trauma he is enduring after his mother's murder. Notably, Nisaa Walcott was slain, and her contorted body was forcibly placed into a plastic container before being discarded on a Bronx sidewalk.
Omir Walcott shares grievances on his mother's murder
According to New York Post, Walcott’s cousin, Khalid Barrow, stands accused of killing her and hiding the body for at least a week before law enforcement apprehended him in the act of trying to dispose of the bin on a sidewalk.
Also Barrow engaged in a spending spree using the victim's credit card and utilized her cell phone to send deceptive text messages to relatives, aiming to mislead them.
Notably, among these messages were texts directed at Omir, where Barrow feigned to be the boy's mother and persuaded him that she desired Barrow to look after him.
On Wednesday, Omir Walcott shared the harrowing experience of enduring 'trauma after trauma' – initially, the murder of his mother, followed by the killer texting him while pretending to be her.
Omir Walcott wept as he delivered his poignant impact statement in a Manhattan courtroom. Shortly before convicted murderer Khalid Barrow, who didn't attend the hearing, received the maximum sentence, the devastated teen left the courtroom in tears.
"My whole family is destroyed," expressed the anguished teenager. “I felt fooled when I found out that I thought that the memory of my mother was kept alive by his text messages,” the boy expressed, referring to Barrow, who chose not to face his family in court and instead remained behind bars.
"I feel an overwhelming sense of guilt, as if I allowed this man to believe he was my mother and allowed him to think he could deceive me. And he did," Omir continued.
The teen shared, “It’s been trauma after trauma, It’s like it’s digging at my skin like someone’s nails just scratching”
Omir then added, . "I feel horrible inside like it was my fault I let this man think that he was my mother and think that he could get one over on me. And he did."
Further he claimed, “It’s hard as a kid growing up with no mother. It’s hard because it was just me and her. That’s the only mother figure I had in my life, so no one could compare to her in any way."
Then he shared about the furture grievances in the absence of his mother, "It’s sad to see she won’t be there for high school graduation.”
Notably, the accused was sentenced to 25 years to life in prison on Wednesday for the 2022 strangulation death of his cousin.
What happened in the courtroom?
Acting Supreme Court Justice Laura Ward, while delivering the sentence, expressed, "It's one of the saddest cases that I have ever presided over.”
Ward added, “It’s one of the saddest cases that I have ever presided over in that the defendant in this case had a family that was willing to be there for him all the time — and he clearly took advantage of that family,”
“What Khalid Barrow did to his cousin after her death was reprehensible. His actions indicated a callous disregard for not only the victim in this case, but for the entire family” Ward continued.
According to his defense attorney, the victim's relatives, filling at least five rows of the courtroom gallery, looked on in tears. However, Barrow apparently "couldn't face" them.
"He described to our social worker and that's reflected in the presentence memorandum that he failed to come to court because he, frankly, couldn't face the extended family," explained Barrow’s lawyer, Adam Freedman, to reporters after the proceedings.
Walcott’s brother claimed addressing the judge, "No mercy was shown to the family. We all were toyed with emotionally, He left us broken, Her life was stolen from us like the money he stole from her" as per New York Post.
