WASHINGTON, DC: Beto O'Rourke, a former presidential candidate, criticized former President Donald Trump on Sunday by asserting that El Paso, Texas, is one of the safest places in the country because it is a "city of immigrants."

During a guest interview on MSNBC’s 'Inside With Jen Psaki', O’Rourke said, "El Paso, Texas, where I’m from has consistently been one of the safest cities in America, if not the safest city in America. And that is not in spite of the fact that we are a city of immigrants. I would argue it is because we are a city of immigrants."

Beto O’Rourke claims El Paso is safer because of immigrants

El Paso was listed as the sixth safest big city in the US by MoneyGeek late in 2023. The remarks follow Trump's trip to El Paso last week, while President Joe Biden traveled to Brownsville, some 325 miles away, for his border visit.

Trump attacked the border situation, calling it a "war," focusing on the influx of migrants coming over the border, and blaming the Biden administration for the situation.

“This is a Biden invasion over the past three years. call him Crooked Joe because he’s crooked. He’s a terrible president and the worst president our country has ever had,” Trump said.

From 2013 to 2019, Beto O'Rourke, the representative for Texas' 16th Congressional District, which includes the majority of El Paso, maintained that immigration has been a crucial factor in the US's prosperity.

He said, "We are a country of immigrants. We are the most powerful, the most successful place on the planet. And it has a lot to do with those who come here from all over the world to do better for themselves. We will only remain the most successful country on the planet by ensuring that we have more immigrants coming here."

Critics of Biden's border policy have pointed fingers at the surge in undocumented immigration and asylum seekers, which has put excessive pressure on US agencies. According to US Customs and Border Patrol data, there were an estimated 176,205 migrant interactions at the US-Mexico border in January, down from a record 301,9983 encounters in December.
