Gypsy Rose Blanchard was born in 1991 in Golden Meadow, Louisiana. She was raised in Missouri by her mother, Clauddine 'Dee Dee' Blanchard.

Gypsy was a fit as a child but her mother Clauddine never allowed her to live a normal life. Dee Dee always asserted throughout her life that her daughter had serious medical issues, like leukemia and muscular dystrophy, because of her premature childbirth. She even made Gypsy use a wheelchair, a feeding tube, and an oxygen tank even though she could've easily survived without these all. Besides, Gypsy was forced to undergo eye surgery and a medical procedure to remove her salivary glands. The woman’s trial attorney, Michael Stanfield, said, as per NBC Chicago, “Essentially Gypsy’s mother was holding her a prisoner. Her mother would not allow her to spend any time alone with any other human being. Her mother, when they went to the doctor, did all the talking.”

As per reports, Gypsy’s mother Clauddine was suffering from Munchausen by proxy. According to WebMD, “Munchausen syndrome by proxy (MSP) - or Munchausen by proxy - is a psychological disorder marked by attention-seeking behavior by a caregiver through those who are in their care.” It adds, “The person with MSP gains attention by seeking medical help for exaggerated or made-up symptoms of a child in their care.”
