The View's Whoopi Goldberg shares emotional memory of surprising her mom with first Disneyland trip
NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: Whoopi Goldberg took a walk down memory lane on the December 14 episode of 'The View', and spoke of her first visit to Disneyland.
The 68-year-old Academy Award winner said that she brought along her late mother, Emma Harris Johnson, on the trip to the Disneyland resort in California to enjoy their first experience together.
Throughout her childhood, Goldberg had always wanted to visit the 'Happiest Place on Earth,' but explained that her mother could not afford the tickets for her and her brother, Clyde.
However, after garnering success in Hollywood, Goldberg was the one to take Johnson along.
Whoopi Goldberg recalls her first visit to Disneyland
"The first time I went was in the early ‘80s," Goldberg responded to the question from a co-host on 'The View'.
"But my mother had always said 'I’m going to take you and Clyde' — that’s my brother — 'I’m gonna take you to Disneyland' and she never could afford to do it,” she continued.
"I asked her to come see me in California, and sent her a ticket," she added.
Goldberg took a quick trip down from Los Angeles to Anaheim without the knowledge of her mother in order to surprise her.
Goldberg recalled her mother asking, "Where do you live? Because I feel like I’ve been in this car a long time."
She continued, "She had no idea where we were going. And so her suitcase was in the back, and everything was there."
At that point, Goldberg decided to give Johnson a hint and asked her to read the signs along the road.
She added, "I said, ‘Oh, Ma, I’m trying to find the thing — what does that thing up there say?’ And she said, ‘Disney… land.' I said, ‘Welcome to Disneyland, Ma.’”

While celebrating her 68th birthday with her co-hosts, Goldberg said that she cherished the opportunity presented to her.
She said, "I think it's important because I feel lucky to have lived to this age. I outlived my brother — I’m older than my brother (ever) was — and I just feel like I should celebrate and have a good time for all those folks who didn't get to get here."
Clyde K Johnson, her brother, reportedly died in 2015 from a brain aneurysm at the age of 65.
