Internet divided as Trump-backed John McGuire defeats Rep Bob Good in Virginia's 5th district primary
CHESAPEAKE, VIRGINIA: State Sen John McGuire has officially unseated House Freedom Caucus chairman Bob Good (R-Va) in the GOP primary for Virginia's 5th Congressional District.
The Virginia State Board of Elections declared McGuire the winner on Tuesday, July 2, with Good trailing by 374 votes out of more than 62,000 cast - a margin of just 0.6%. Despite the narrow loss, Good has vowed to fund a recount, given that the margin narrowly exceeded the 0.5% threshold where the state would have covered the cost.
McGuire, a former Navy SEAL and staunch Donald Trump supporter expressed his gratitude in a statement: "Number one, I want to thank God. We could not have done this without my wife Tracy, our incredible team, and of course President Trump! This is the honor of a lifetime."

McGuire's campaign received a significant boost from Trump, who endorsed him early on. At a post-debate rally in Chesapeake last Friday, Trump proudly noted, “He started off, not a lot of people knew him. I endorsed him and he went up 27 points and he ended up winning by like, does it matter? Few hundred votes. We’ll take it. Doesn’t matter. Two votes is okay, too,” reported New York Post.
Good, who took over as chairman of the Freedom Caucus earlier this year, has had a contentious tenure, often clashing with fellow Republicans.
His support for Florida Governor Ron DeSantis in the 2024 GOP presidential primary and his role in the ousting of former Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif) last year has made him a polarizing figure.
Following the initial vote tally, Good raised concerns about election integrity, pointing to several fire alarms triggered at polling stations on primary night, including one at Liberty University, his former employer. Local officials, however, attributed the alarm to cleaning equipment.
Good also criticized the backing McGuire received from prominent establishment Republicans, saying, “Just look at who’s supporting my opponent. It is the Paul Ryan, Kevin McCarthy, Eric Cantor types—the swamp folks, the RINOs for whom the endless wars, allegiance to the industrial military complex—that’s who’s funding my opponent.”
The primary saw substantial financial involvement from outside groups, with an estimated $10.7 million spent on the contest, over half of which was aimed against Good, according to OpenSecrets.
Looking ahead to the general election, McGuire is favored to win the seat against Democrat Gloria Witt, continuing the Republican hold on Virginia's 5th District.
