Tyrese Gibson says he's unable to pay child support after his income fell drastically amid actors' strike
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Tyrese Gibson has denied any malicious intent in failing to pay the full amount of child support.
He cited the impact of recent strikes in Hollywood as a major factor affecting his finances.
The 'Transformers' actor admitted he has not been able to pay "all amounts owed," as per court documents obtained by Radar Online.
Tyrese Gibson states his income 'fluctuates wildly'
Gibson who has been acting since 2001 made the majority of his income as an actor despite being a singer since 1994.
According to Gibson's court document, he shared that his income "fluctuates wildly."
Explaining the fluctuation in his income, Gibson shared that "the years in which he films [a Fast & Furious] franchise movie, his income is the highest in those years."
"In 2022, [Gibson] filmed the franchise movie in question, and he has not filmed any segment in that franchise movie since 2022," read the document on Gibson.
"Consequently, [Gibson’s] income has fluctuated downward since the trial in this case, and as expected, [Gibson] does not earn the same amount that he earned in August 2022," further narrated the court document.
Adding to his explanation, his lawyer shared, "Neither Gibson nor anybody else in Hollywood could have predicted the major strikes in 2023 that affected everyone’s income who earns a living from the movie industry."
“[Gibson] was gravely impacted just as everyone who works in Hollywood," he said.
"Because of the six-month work stoppage in the film industry in 2023, and because [Gibson] has not shot a major film since 2022, [Gibson’s] income has decreased to less than twenty percent (20%) of what [Gibson] was earning in August 2022, which [Gibson] would like to prove at a hearing on this matter," the lawyer stated.
Tyrese Gibson accused the judge of deciding child support amount due to bias against him
A judge has yet to rule Gibson's claim that he has "not had the ability to pay" the full amount of child support.
Accusations from Gibson’s ex-wife Samantha Lee emerged after she accused him of being in contempt of court, claiming he had consistently paid only a portion of the court-ordered child support of $10,690 per month.
Lee who shares a 4-year-old daughter, Soraya, with Gibson alleged that only half the required amount was paid in December and January 2024, and noted that $10K was paid for November 2023.
Lee previously accused the actor of failing to pay the court-ordered child support. She alleged that instead of the $10K, he had started paying only $2,236.
However, Gibson responded by claiming that the judge's decision on the support amount was due to a bias against him and that the amount was excessive.
The judge then went on to order him to pay $237K in back child support and an additional amount of $400K for Lee’s legal bills.
