NEW YORK: A New York robber who was found guilty was given a sentence ranging from 25 years to life in prison for repeatedly stabbing his ex-girlfriend following their breakup.

The 51-year-old Wayne Chambers was informed of his fate in July 2021 for the Stony Brook University Hospital murder of Sandra McIntosh, a 46-year-old nurse.

“This defendant stabbed his ex-girlfriend in cold blood and without remorse,” said District Attorney Tierney.

“My heart continues to go out to Sandra McIntosh’s loved ones. I hope this lengthy sentence provides them with some measure of justice after she was tragically taken from them by this defendant.”

In December, he was found guilty of second-degree murder. The prosecution claimed that Chambers picked McIntosh up shortly before 8 p.m.

That day, he had driven her white Lexus SUV all day after dropping her off at work.

As reported by New York ABC affiliate WABC, McIntosh's sister informed police that Chambers had mentioned earlier that day that he was picking up some of his belongings from McIntosh's house. The couple had split up months earlier.

Chambers drove "erratically" until he pulled over next to a Holtsville wooded area, according to prosecutors, after picking up his ex-girlfriend and getting her into the car.

Witnesses later "heard McIntosh screaming" and later observed Chambers standing outside the Lexus "in a physical altercation with McIntosh," according to Tierney.

Chambers "attempted to drag her out of the woods by her hair," according to the witnesses.

Chambers, according to the prosecution, stabbed McIntosh at least 25 times that evening, "puncturing her heart and lung," according to Tierney.

Prosecutors claim that Chambers left his ex-girlfriend to die and fled in McIntosh's car as soon as he realized someone had seen him.

Police records obtained by the New York Post after McIntosh's death show that she was not discovered bleeding heavily until a resident heard her cries for assistance.

Sandra McIntosh's vehicle was found in Bronx

McIntosh was brought to Stony Brook University Hospital, the same facility where she worked, and was pronounced dead. The victim's cousin Tanisha Evans expressed how devastated the family was to local affiliate WCBS-TV.

"We're just upset," she remarked. "We’re just broken." During the trial, Suffolk County police testified that they located McIntosh's car in the Bronx while attempting to locate Chambers that evening.

“Red staining that appeared to be blood was observed on both the exterior and interior of the vehicle,” Tierney remarked.

“The evidence at trial established that the red staining not only tested presumptively positive for blood, but many of those stains contained mixtures of DNA between [McIntosh] and the defendant.”

Additionally, the surveillance video footage from the location where McIntosh's car was discovered was discovered by the investigators.

It showed Chambers getting out of the white Lexus as it pulled up to a Bronx house and holding what looked to be a cell phone.

Investigators spoke with an acquaintance of Chambers whose home was a block away from the location where McIntosh was discovered on July 22, 2021, Tierney told Law&Crime.

The witness reported to them that she had seen Chambers had a "cut on one of his index fingers that was covered by a band-aid" when he had arrived at her house that evening.

She added that there was a "bloody spot" on his shirt. Subsequently, detectives claimed to have located Chambers' cell phone at the Bronx location where he was filmed and at the crime scene.

A week after the stabbing, on July 30, Suffolk County police discovered Chambers at a hotel in Newburg, New York, and took him into custody.

In 1999, Chambers was found guilty of first-degree robbery and given a 19-year prison sentence. He served 14 of those years.
