David Berkoff's Olympics legacy - From records to poineering 'Berkoff Blastoff' technique

A backstroker, Dave Berkoff competed at the 1988 and 1992 Olympics in four events, winning medals in each of the events, including two gold medals in medley relay, according to the Olympics atheletes biography.

During the 1992 Barcelona Summer Olympics, David Berkoff, now 57, was placed third in the 100-meter backstroke. He also took home the gold in the 4 x 100-meter medley relay that same year.

David also competed at the 1988 Seoul Summer Olympics where he was placed second in the 100-meter backstroke and won gold in the 4 x 100-meter medley relay, People noted.

His international sideboard also includes a silver medal in 100 back from the 1987 Pan American Games and a silver in medley relay at the 1987 Universiade.

David also pioneered a new technique called the Berkoff Blastoff when he arrived at Seoul. It was the technique "where he could plunge after the push-off, not rising above the water until the 35 to 40-metre mark," according to Olympics Wiki.

FINA banned backstrokers from using the technique after the Olympics in Seoul and placed a time limit on their time underwater following the turn.
