LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM: One of contemporary cinema's most acclaimed auteurs may eventually try his hand at horror if presented with the right idea.

During an on-stage interview at London's British Film Institute (BFI) on Thursday, February 15, Christopher Nolan intrigued fans when he expressed interest in directing a horror film, though he noted the genre requires "really exceptional" concepts that are rare, as per Variety.

While the iconic filmmaker has built his reputation on mind-bending dramas and superhero epics, his devotees are already longing for the day Nolan unveils his first horror project and brings his trademark flair for tension and practical effects to the scare factor.

Christopher Nolan says he requires a 'really exceptional idea' to create a horror flick

When asked by an audience member if he would consider venturing into the horror genre, Nolan responded positively while comparing elements of his film 'Oppenheimer' to horror.

He said, "'Oppenheimer' has elements of horror in it definitely, as I think is appropriate to the subject matter. I think horror films are very interesting because they depend on very cinematic devices, it really is about a visceral response to things."

He went on to praise the genre's allowance for bleakness and abstraction compared to typical Hollywood studio films. Nolan also discussed playing with different genres within his movies, using 'Oppenheimer' as an example that incorporates heist and courtroom drama genres in certain sections.

"The reason I settled on those two genres for those sections is they are mainstream genres in which dialogue, people talking, is inherently intense and interesting to an audience," explained Nolan, adding, "That’s the fun thing with the genre, you can play with a lot of different areas, wherein a different type of film you really wouldn’t be allowed to."

The 'Interstellar' director noted, "At some point, I’d love to make a horror film. But I think a really good horror film requires a really exceptional idea. And those are few and far between."
