LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Award-winning actor Bette Midler took to the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to stand by First Lady Jill Biden, who has been facing mounting criticism from Republican voters, reported Newsweek.

According to the publication, the upcoming general election which is set to be a rematch between presumptive Democratic and Republican nominees, Joe Biden and Donald Trump, is considered by political observers as one of the most important in modern history. As such, the incumbent's lackluster performance in the first presidential debate has led to calls from even the Democrats for him to step away from the race.

Jill Biden, who has been beside her husband throughout the campaign, started drawing flak thereafter, as she publicly praised President Biden's performance on the CNN debate stage on June 27. She was featured on the August issue cover of Vogue magazine, which led to the criticism intensifying from the Republicans.

Bette Midler's tweet supports Jill Biden

Midler, known for films such as 'Beaches' and 'The First Wives Club', wrote in a post on X on Thursday, July 4, "The pile-on against #JillBiden is disgusting but hardly surprising. As usual, blame the woman, every man’s default position since f***ing Adam and Eve."

She went on to inquire, "Did it ever enter your thick skulls that she might be doing the OTHER thing women are socialized to do, standing by her man?"

The actor's post went viral on the social media platform and strongly divided netizens on their take. While some people were in agreement with Middler's sentiment, others took the opportunity to further attack Jill Biden.

Bette Midler's tweet garners mixed reactions from social media

Responding to Medler's post, a user wrote on X, "Our patriarchal culture has misogyny embedded in every male oriented ritual. It's time for that to change."

"A good wife tells her husband when he's embarrassing himself," expressed another.

"Women have been unjustifiably attacked from day one. It’s disgusting and unacceptable," stated a third.

"Only a power-hungry controlling wife would exploit her sick husband like that. It's sad, and you should be ashamed of yourself for supporting her," jibed a fourth user.

"She’s not standing by her man, she’s exploiting him. He’s obviously not well both physically and mentally. Not every man is an abuser nor every woman a saint," commented a fifth.
