LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Vito spent his 97th birthday doing what he loved most: dancing, laughing and holding court at a party.
He died at that celebration on Monday, November 2, in Los Angeles.
It happened moments after he danced to the Bee Gees’ “Stayin’ Alive,” and just after his guests sang “Happy Birthday.”
A young neighbor filmed his last dance and millions have now watched it.

Man dies moments after 'Stayin Alive' dance
Vito had planned the party himself, with a Halloween theme. His neighbor, baker Eden Malinoff, brought the cake.
The video she posted shows him at his liveliest. He claps, sways and grins at the room while the disco hit plays.
Then the night took an unexpected turn. Shortly after the guests sang to him, Vito suddenly collapsed at the party, surrounded by the people who had come to celebrate him.
Malinoff said the evening did not end the way anyone expected. She called it a “dramatic exit,” but she believes he would have chosen it.
The mood at the party before that was one of pure fun.
When Malinoff asked what the secret to a long life was, Vito’s answer was a joke: “never drink cheap liquor.”
She baked him a red wine chocolate cake in his honor.
According to Malinoff, he was the loudest, liveliest person in the room, and at 24, she could not keep up with him.
A close friend of Vito’s later confirmed his death online.
The friend said Vito had health problems whose severity those around him had not realized.
He added that Vito “passed away peacefully with his favorite music going.”
Vito's birthday video goes viral
The people who knew Vito describe a man decades older than his friends who never seemed older than any of them.
He was a regular in Malinoff’s circle and, in her words, “the life of the party.”
She said he changed how she sees getting older.
“If I learned one thing from Vito, it’s to never let your age stop you,” Malinoff said.
She said she is grateful to have been there, in a room full of people who loved him.
Her tribute video has passed 10 million views on TikTok.
Strangers have filled the comments with their own wishes to go out the same way, laughing and surrounded by friends and good music.
“Stayin’ Alive” has added to the video’s pull. The 1977 Bee Gees song is one of the best-known dance tracks of all time.
Hearing it play as a 97-year-old swayed and smiled in his last moments has made the clip hard for viewers to forget.
