‘AI could kill us’ warning goes bipartisan as GOP firebrand joins Sanders to demand guardrails
WASHINGTON, DC: AI fears are cutting across the usual political divide as Steve Bannon, one of President Trump's earliest advisers, and independent Sen Bernie Sanders have come together to demand Artificial Intelligence (AI) guardrails.
While both figures may stand on opposite sides of the political spectrum they came together to speak at a press gathering to demand strict monitoring of AI and push for a more human-focused approach to the technology.
Sanders to bring legislation to ban super-intelligent AI development
Former adviser and chief strategist to President Donald Trump, Steve Bannon and progressive Independent Bernie Sanders appeared at the "Pro-Human Assembly" in Washington, DC, calling for a "human-centric" approach to developing artificial intelligence technology.
Alongside the two, a diverse set of speakers called for curb on AI development.
Speaking to nearly 300 people packed into a Washington, DC, ballroom, Sanders raised concerns about AI surpassing human intelligence and escaping human control.
Sanders said he will introduce a legislation to permanently ban the development of "super-intelligent" AI, with Congressman Greg Casar, D-Texas, next week.
"Despite living in a so-called democracy, the public has had virtually no input into the AI revolution that's transforming the world," Sanders said.
"Congress, under both Democratic and Republican control, has been asleep at the wheel, and we now have a president whose ignorance regarding this issue is truly embarrassing."
Sanders expressed that society shouldn't let AI developers continue to improve their products if company leaders admit they are losing control of the technology.
Steve Bannon demand curb on tech exchange between China-US
Steve Bannon, who took to the stage immediately after Sanders, laid out a nationalist approach to the technology. He argued that tech leaders have money but people’s trust.
"We're not doomers," he said. "But we aren't gonna give these guys carte blanche. Their arrogance is overwhelming."
He said the US should place curbs on any exchange of chips, tech or knowledge between the US and China.
"Kick them out," he said. "Take all Chinese nationals out of the labs and back to mainland China."
AI researcher says it ‘could kill us’ in if not controlled
Earlier this month, AI researcher Jacob Coxon publicly resigned from Anthropic, saying that artificial intelligence, while safe for people to use now, could one day threaten humanity as the technology grows more powerful.
Anthropic is an AI firm, which makes the AI app Claude.
“If you have a super advanced intelligence, it could — it will be smart enough to kill us," Coxon told CBS News.
