WASHINGTON, DC: Secretary for the Department of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas admitted on Friday, May 17, that more migrants have entered through the southern border of the United States under the administration of incumbent Joe Biden than his predecessor, former President Donald Trump.

The admission came when Mayorkas was questioned on the border crisis at an event at The Economic Club in Washington, reported Fox News. He blamed the large influx of illegal immigrants on a number of hemispheric factors and a "broken" system.

Alejandro Mayorkas' statement on border crisis

"The number of encounters at the southern border is very high, but it's very, very important, number one, to contextualize it and, number two, to explain it," Mayorkas reportedly stated at the event.

"From a context perspective, the world is seeing the greatest level of displacement since at least World War II. So the challenge of migration is not exclusive to the southern border, nor to the Western Hemisphere, it is global."

Citing a number of reasons for the rise in global migration, including violence, insecurity, poverty, corruption, authoritarian regimes, and "extreme weather events", he went on to explain why the United States attracted large numbers of displaced people.

"In our hemisphere, we overcame Covid more rapidly than any other country. We had, in a post-Covid world, 11 million jobs to fill, we are a country of choice as a destination, and one takes those two forces and then one considers the fact that we have an immigration system that is broken fundamentally and we have a level of encounters that we do."

The Secretary highlighted the fact that the average time between an encounter and the adjudication of an asylum claim is seven years as evidence of the broken system. When later asked how many people crossed into the country under the Biden administration, he replied, "It's several million people."

Admitting more people entered the US during the current administration compared to the previous one, he proceeded to reason, "Now in 2019, there was almost a 100% increase in the number of encounters at the southern border over 2018. The situation in the hemisphere was propelling people to leave their country. 2020 was a period of tremendously suppressed migration throughout the hemisphere and around the world because of the Covid-19 people coming over the border illegally."

Internet slams Mayorkas over his statement on influx of illegal immigrants

Social media users responding to Mayorkas' statement slammed him on X, with one user writing, "Mayorkas is destroying America."

"This man is beyond ridiculous," stated another.

"He doesn't have to 'admit' anything. We are watching them flood the border daily," shared a third.

"'Broken system'..isn’t that his job?" inquired a fourth user.

"No shit Sherlock," jibed a fifth.
