AOC trolled as she labels Benjamin Netanyahu a 'war criminal' ahead of his address to Congress
WASHINGTON, DC: Rep Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) strongly opposed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s upcoming address to Congress in a post on X on Tuesday, June 18.
According to Fox News, Netanyahu has been invited by both House and Senate leaders to address Congress on July 24, as a show of support for the long-time ally, even as Israel has been facing mounting criticism across the globe for its military assault in Gaza.
The invitation letter was signed by lawmakers across the aisle, including House Speaker Mike Johnson, a Republican, and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, a Democrat, Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell, and House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries.
Opposition to Benjamin Netanyahu's visit
The invitation to the Israeli Prime Minister has received pushback from the progressive lawmakers, who have vociferously slammed Netanyahu's handling of the war in Gaza following the Hamas attack of October 7, 2023.
In her post on X, AOC wrote against Netanyahu, "This man should not be addressing Congress. He is a war criminal. And he certainly has no regard for US law, which is explicitly designed to prevent US weapons from facilitating human rights abuses."
"His invitation should be revoked. It should’ve never been sent in the 1st place," she added.

The congresswoman was supported in her stance by her colleague, Rep Greg Casar (D-Texas), who told Fox News earlier in June, "Instead of coming here, we need Netanyahu to stop bombing indiscriminately in Gaza and for him to respect the president's red line of not having continued military operations in Rafah. I don't think it's a good time for him to be coming."
When asked if he planned on attending the scheduled speech, Casar replied, "I don't plan to attend, and I will plan to participate in whatever advocacy is being done to push for Netanyahu and Hamas to agree to a cease-fire."
Internet divided over AOC's stance on Netanyahu's address
Netizens appeared divided over AOC slamming Netanyahu and opposing his invitation, as the following tweets demonstrate.
"Even a broken clock is right twice a day," a user commented over the Congresswoman's take on X.
"Seriously, is anyone still paying attention to what AOC says. If so, I have a bridge I would like to sell them," mocked another.

"She’s not wrong about this one," stated a third.
"She should just stay home!" jibed a fourth user.
"Never thought I would agree with AOC on anything but here we are," quipped a fifth.
