CHINATOWN, MANHATTAN: Multiple anti-ICE protesters were arrested by New York City police in Chinatown after clashing with the authorities over an immigration crackdown on Saturday, November 29.
Hundreds of protesters shouted, "ICE out of New York," and also threw planters at the officers during the heated clash at the Lower Manhattan parking garage, prompting NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch to sharply rebuke federal officials.
Hundreds of anti-ICE protesters clash with police
NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch reportedly blasted federal authorities for compromising the safety of her officers after hundreds of "rabid anti-ICE protestors" clashed with cops in Lower Manhattan on Saturday.
Angry demonstrators converged on a parking garage near the US General Services Administration building on Centre Street, where dozens of federal agents had gathered in what appeared to be an immigration raid.
Cops responded to a 911 call about more than 150 protestors blocking traffic and access to the garage.
The agitators were seen trying to scale the grated garage windows, but were pulled off by police as others yelled, “ICE out of New York! ICE out now!”
One protester recalled, "There were people climbing up trying to see who ICE had inside. They were arresting people for no reason."
At least 18 arrested after protesters threw planters and barricades
Some demonstrators were lifting and throwing planters and police barricades toward NYPD officers. The mob also shouted expletives, screaming "you are corrupt!", and disregarded police pleas to "back up" behind barricades.
Others yelled “f**k you!” and made an obscene gesture at a man in a van who tried to make his way up the street before fleeing as police approached.
An Australian tourist who witnessed the chaos described both sides as "pretty aggressive," saying, "A lot of people were shoved to the ground."
At least 18 anti-ICE agitators were arrested for obstructing government administration and disorderly conduct.
The incident came one week after an illegal immigrant was arrested by ICE agents while allegedly selling counterfeit merchandise on Canal Street in Chinatown.
NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch blasts federal agents over clash
Within hours of the confrontation, NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch received a call from Christopher Raia, head of the FBI's New York office, along with Special Agent Ricky Patel, the head of Homeland Security Investigations in Newark, to apologize for the incident.
Sources say Tisch, who will stay the top cop under mayor-elect and longtime ICE critic Zohran Mamdani, gave both men an “earful,” saying the situation was “unacceptable.”
Tisch reportedly warned the federal agents that such shows of force by immigrant officers are "putting the feds, NYPD cops and the public at risk" and must end before people get seriously hurt.
This local criticism comes despite Mamdani having had what both sides termed a "productive" meeting with President Donald Trump last week. Meanwhile, some passersby, such as Peter Suh of New Jersey, blamed the police for interfering: “It’s not right what they’re doing. People should be left alone to protest.”
