BROOKLYN, NEW YORK: Rep Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) celebrated Zohran Mamdani’s victory in the New York City mayoral race during an interview with MSNBC on Tuesday, November 4.
She highlighted Democratic wins by Mikie Sherrill in New Jersey and Abigail Spanberger in Virginia, saying they showed Americans were rejecting fear as a guiding force. Mamdani triumphed over Andrew Cuomo and Curtis Sliwa to claim the mayoralty, while Spanberger defeated Winsome Earle-Sears to become Virginia’s first female governor.
AOC hails Zohran Mamdani’s win as new era for Democrats
“Americans everywhere are not going to be scared,” Ocasio-Cortez told MSNBC. “We will not be intimidated by an administration that is violating rights and making life hard and unaffordable for every single American in this country. And we will send in a wave of Democrats that will not bow to this administration, but stand up to this administration.”
At Mamdani’s mayoral victory party in Brooklyn, Ocasio-Cortez called his campaign a “heroic effort” and hailed the 34-year-old’s win as a sign of a new generation sweeping away the status quo in both parties.
“They were not just tasked with defeating a Republican,” she emphasized. “They were also tasked with defeating the old guard of the Democratic Party that essentially led us to many of the perils of this moment. So he had a two-front war to win, which is what makes his victory so deeply impressive.”
AOC calls for Democratic unity after Zohran Mamdani’s win
Still, Ocasio-Cortez said Mamdani’s approach isn’t a universal model for electoral success. Citing Mikie Sherrill’s win in New Jersey and Abigail Spanberger’s victory in Virginia, she urged Democrats to embrace both progressive and moderate voices.
She said, "And I do think that's it's moment a lot of people who are willing to talk about party unity when it serves them but not party unity, when it serves everybody. It puts those folks on notice and I think. Also with folks On Notice that we have a future to plan for."
“We have a future to fight for, and we’re either going to do that together or you’re going to be left behind,” she added before saying, “And I think that that is not a partisan issue. It’s not about progressive, it’s not moderate, it’s not liberal. This is about do you understand the assignment of fighting fascism right now? And the assignment is to come together across differences, no matter what.”
