“I brought up what I feel about our personal relationship, and you then went to talk about Christ,” the actor told his mother.
“That is what I feel causes division in our relationship... everything that comes up feels like an opportunity for you to talk about Christ,” he added.
Armie described a period when he and Dru were completely estranged because of this tension.
“We actually had a period in our lives when we didn’t talk at all because I said, ‘I don’t need a pastor, I need a mom,’” said Armie.
“If you’re unable to be a mom and only able to be a pastor, then I don’t need that relationship in my life,” he shared.
Despite these past difficulties, the 'Call Me By Your Name' actor emphasized that he respects his mother’s faith.
“I have no problem with your relationship with Christ,” he told her, adding, “I think everyone is entitled to their own spirituality.”
Armie Hammer on setting boundaries and finding common ground
Armie Hammer expressed his desire for his mother to keep aside religious discussions when it comes to their personal relationship.
"I’m really trying to be respectful," he said, urging Dru to focus on their family bond rather than preaching.
The 'Mine' actor shared that he has learned to set what he calls “very clear boundaries” with his mother, especially when it comes to conversations about faith.
In response, Dru explained, “The place where you and I get into trouble is when it feels like to me that my spirituality does not look exactly like your spirituality."
Speaking about his healing journey, Armie said, “I think we are all spiritual beings,” and noted that he begins each day with meditation, prayer, and a gratitude practice, according to OK Magazine.
Their recent conversation on the podcast suggested that Armie and his mother are making an effort to rebuild their relationship by respecting each other’s beliefs.
Before turning to podcasting, Armie faced significant public scrutiny following allegations of abuse and disturbing claims involving cannibalism fantasies.
He has denied the accusations, but the controversy led to a significant downturn in his acting career.
