‘Awful’: Jamie Lee Curtis clarifies her ‘New Girl’ filming experience

NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: Jamie Lee Curtis made sure she did not hold back on explaining her comments about working as a guest star on 'New Girl'. The actress shared a lengthy post on her social media account and clarified what she meant when she described her experience on the show as "silent, awful."

The explanation came after Curtis discussed her time on the show at the Los Angeles premiere of 'Newlyweds'. She explained that her criticism was directed at the single-camera filming format rather than the series, its cast or the team behind it.

Curtis, 67, shared a lengthy post on Instagram on Tuesday, August 11, alongside a photo of herself on the set of 'New Girl' with Zooey Deschanel and recurring star, the late Rob Reiner.

The explanation began with, “Hey internet, hi.”

“As if we don't have bigger issues facing Americans and the world at large and natural disasters and unnatural behaviors of despots than to be concerned about a flip comment picked up at a press moment promoting NEWLYWEDS @NBC.”

"I was there gushing about a multi-camera sitcom that I co-created along with @gail.lerner Gail Lerner about a late in life love and people finding each other and marrying on a whim," she shared. 

"It stars Tea Leoni and Tim Daly as the couple, and we are having so much fun, and the audiences are loving it, and I was comparing how much I liked doing the show live in front of a studio audience, which is almost like doing a play where you get immediate feedback, she wrote.

"To the experience of doing a single camera comedy like NEW GIRL where there's absolutely no feedback, as you're trying to do comedy in a vacum, like a comedy feature and I said it wasn't my favorite experience although the show itself is fantastic and the team that made it are talented and that Zooey Deschanel is an absolute gem of a human," she continued.

"And said I got to play with my friend, Rob Reiner, as exes, and that was sweet and lovely and so please, let's not waste clicks and comments and just move on to WAY more important things. That will be all," she concluded.

Jamie Lee Curtis' role in 'New Girl'

'New Girl' follows a quirky teacher who moves into a loft with three single men after a breakup. Curtis played Deschanel's character Jess Day's mother, Joan Day, and appeared in multiple episodes of the series.

The actress made clear that her comments were not aimed at the show's quality or the people she worked with. She specifically praised Deschanel and recalled the experience of working with Reiner, who played Joan's former husband on the series.

Max Greenfield also recently spoke about a possible 'New Girl' reunion, saying, “I’ve seen scripts, they’re amazing.”

The series aired on Fox from September 2011 to May 2018 and starred Deschanel, 46, alongside Jake Johnson, Max Greenfield, Lamorne Morris and Hannah Simone. It later gained many new fans after streaming on Netflix.

Curtis' clarification came after her initial comments drew attention online. At the NBCUniversal Summer Backlot Experience on August 10, she said that filming a single-camera comedy felt like doing a movie because there was no live audience reaction.

She explained, “It’s a great show, New Girl, very funny, but doing it is just like doing a movie. You know, you’ve got a camera crew, and nobody laughs. It’s silent, and it’s awful. For me, awful. Single-camera comedies, for me, not fun."
