Sean Lowe describes traumatic journey his family experienced over the weekend
Reality TV star Sean Lowe, 41, shared a chilling video on Instagram on Monday, March 17, recounting a traumatic incident with his rescue dog. Known for documenting family moments and life milestones on social media, Lowe revealed that his family endured a frightening experience over the weekend.
The incident occurred on March 13 while Lowe was hosting a barbecue with friends, and his wife, Catherine, took their three young children to the mall.
While Lowe was cooking, he explained that he left a window open, causing some smoke from the grill to drift inside, which set off the smoke alarm.
As he worked to clear the smoke, the alarm somehow triggered an aggressive reaction from his rescue dog, a boxer named Moose.
Lowe recalled, “He shows his teeth at me and just attacks me. I don’t mean bite and then run off — like a lot of dogs do when they’re scared or defensive — I mean attacks me.”
The situation escalated quickly, with Lowe describing how he felt when the dog was grabbing his arm.
“I feel him ripping into the flesh of my arm and at this point I’m doing everything I possibly can just to fend this dog off…I know I’m bleeding badly," said Lowe.
After several minutes, Lowe managed to get Moose outside, but to his surprise, the dog returned and attacked again. "I’m not trying to be dramatic but I honestly just felt like I am fighting for my life here against my dog," he added.
With the help of friends, Lowe was able to escape, but not without serious injury. Fearing he had injured an artery due to the significant amount of blood, he expressed gratitude that his friends were there to rush him to the ER.
"I thank God that my friends were there because they were able to rush me to the ER," he said.
Sean Lowe returns to emergency room after his dog attacked him again
Sean Lowe shared that he received stitches in his arm following the first attack, but the situation took a turn for the worse the following morning.
While outside in the yard, Lowe explained that the door intended to keep the dog, Moose, contained wasn’t properly locked, and the wind blew it open, freeing the dog.
"Going through a dog attack is pretty darn traumatic. Having to re-live it less than 12 hours later, seeing that dog running straight at you, is a feeling I don’t think I ever want to experience again," Lowe said in a video. "He made a B-line right at me and just lunged and started attacking me again," he added.
Lowe described the terrifying moment as he screamed for help while trying to wrestle Moose to the ground.
"I’ve got a hold of his collar but I know he’s ripped my arm open and I just know I'm fighting for my life here," he recalled.
"I feel like if this dog gets up, he’s going to kill me," Lowe added that it took all his strength to control the dog, despite weighing 220 pounds.
"If it were anyone else, he would’ve killed my children or my wife," he said.
Lowe held Moose for about 10 minutes until the police and ambulance arrived. Afterward, he returned to the emergency room for additional stitches to his other arm. He explained that the family had adopted Moose from a shelter less than three months ago, and the attack was particularly shocking given the dog's previously affectionate behavior.
Lowe is now working with animal control and a no-kill shelter to determine the best course of action, as he can no longer keep the dog in the house with his children.
Sean Lowe says it 'wasn't Moose's fault'
Sean Lowe further emphasized that he didn’t blame his dog, Moose, for the attacks.
"It wasn’t Moose’s fault," he said. "I think it’s clear he experienced a lot of trauma before we got him and had something neurologically wrong where just a switch flipped and he turned into an absolute killer, which was so weird."

The 'Bachelor' alum went on to explain that Moose hadn’t shown any signs of aggression prior to the attacks. "He really didn’t show any signs and he was great around my kids, he was great in the house. He was just an affectionate, loving boxer," Lowe added.
Sitting beside his wife, Catherine, who was visibly emotional throughout the video, Lowe praised her for being a good caretaker as he recovered. He acknowledged that the incident had taken a significant emotional toll on her, but reassured viewers that they were doing well now.

"Overall, I’m super grateful it was me and it was not my kids or my wife. And that I made it out relatively unscathed. I’ll have scarred arms for the rest of my life but I can live with that," he said.
Lowe reflected on the psychological impact, admitting, "From a psychological perspective, I think I’ll be okay. She’ll catch me cringing every once in a while because I keep replaying it in my mind. But I think in the long run, I’ll be okay."
He ended the video on a heartfelt note, saying, "We’re torn up about it. And we miss our dog, as crazy as it sounds."
