Charlamagne Tha God blasts reversal on Hunter Biden pardon in heated exchange with Whoopi Goldberg
NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: Charlamagne Tha God aimed his ire at President Joe Biden’s decision to pardon his son, Hunter Biden, during a heated discussion on 'The View' on Wednesday, December 3.
'The Breakfast Club' co-host criticized the move, calling it contradictory to the president’s previous assertion that “no one is above the law.”
Charlamagne Tha God calls out Joe Biden's pardon contradiction
Hunter Biden, who faced felony tax and gun charges carrying sentences of up to 42 years, received a blanket pardon from his father on Sunday.
The pardon covered any crimes Hunter “committed or may have committed or taken part in” between January 2014 and December 2024, according to Huff Post.
“The bipartisan criticism of the pardon is valid,” Charlamagne argued on 'The View'. “Democrats stand on this moral high ground all the time and act so self-righteous about justice.”
President Biden previously stated he would not interfere in his son’s legal troubles and repeatedly emphasized that “no one is above the law.”
Charlamagne pointed out the dissonance between the president’s words and actions. “When they were calling Trump a threat to democracy and saying nobody is above the law, they were running on that,” said Charlamagne.
“He didn’t have to volunteer that lie to begin with,” he added.
Whoopi Goldberg pushes back against Charlamagne Tha God's criticism
Whoopi Goldberg, a co-host on 'The View', interrupted Charlamagne Tha God to challenge his assertion.
She argued that the president’s motivations for the pardon were unknown and should not be assumed.
“You really think he just changed his mind over Thanksgiving weekend all of a sudden?” countered Charlamagne.
Goldberg suggested that Biden’s decision stemmed from frustration over political double standards.
“At some point, you get to the place where you just go, ‘So I’m just going to follow the straight and narrow, always, ‘cause that’s what’s expected of Democrats?’” said Goldberg.
Charlamagne Tha God and Whoopi Goldberg's heated yet respectful exchange
Charlamagne Tha God, however, maintained that Biden’s reversal undermined his credibility and pointed out the partisan loyalty that often blinds people to their own party’s faults.
“Why can’t you say when Democrats are wrong?” he asked Goldberg.
“And why can’t Republicans say when Republicans are wrong?” he added.
Goldberg defended her position, stating that she does hold Democrats accountable but doesn’t believe the pardon was a political mistake.
The debate culminated in a miscommunication, with Goldberg misinterpreting Charlamagne’s remark as a personal insult.
He clarified on-air that he meant her argument, not her personally, was “ridiculous.”
The two ultimately made amends, with Charlamagne assuring Goldberg, “I didn’t say you were ridiculous, Ms Goldberg. I would never,” before the pair hugged.
