Chris Brown avoids jail time with 8-month suspended sentence for 2023 London nightclub attack
LONDON, ENGLAND: Grammy Award-winning singer Chris Brown has received a suspended eight-month sentence in the United Kingdom over a 2023 attack at a London nightclub, avoiding jail time.
The case relates to what prosecutors described as a “vicious and unprovoked” assault on music producer Abraham Diaw at Tape London in February 2023.
Brown pleaded guilty to affray at Southwark Crown Court in July, alongside his co-defendant, Omololu Akinlolu.

Chris Brown’s suspended sentence and affray guilty plea
Before sentencing, Judge Tony Baumgartner acknowledged Brown’s career in music while warning him against expecting preferential treatment because of his celebrity status.
“I take account of your employment and long-established career in music. Your fame, commercial success and professional standing do not entitle you to special treatment. The law applies equally to everyone,” the judge said.
Brown pleaded guilty to one count of affray at London’s Southwark Crown Court in July in connection with the attack. Akinlolu, a Florida rapper also known as HoodyBaby, also pleaded guilty.
The United Kingdom’s Crown Prosecution Service (CPS), which performs a role similar to that of a district attorney in the US, described Akinlolu as Brown’s vocal coach. He received a four-month sentence, suspended for 12 months.

The court heard that the pair attacked Diaw at Tape London in February 2023.
Brown was accused of striking the music producer twice on the head with a tequila bottle, while Akinlolu punched him. According to the CPS, the assault continued as the victim attempted to escape through the nightclub.
“They continued their assault whilst the victim attempted to flee through the club,” the CPS said in a statement. “The victim was kicked while he was seated defenseless on the floor.”
The victim subsequently went to the hospital with injuries to his head and knees. A warrant was issued for Brown and Akinlolu’s arrest, but both men had left the United Kingdom by then.

Chris Brown’s 2025 arrest in the UK
Brown was arrested in May 2025 when he returned to the United Kingdom as part of his world tour, which included a performance in Manchester.
Following the conviction, Claire Campbell, a senior prosecutor at CPS London South, described the incident as a serious act of violence.
“This was a vicious and unprovoked attack by Brown and Akinlolu in a crowded nightclub where Brown used a glass bottle as a weapon to strike the victim’s head twice,” Campbell said.
She also stressed that such violence was unacceptable and that the prosecution service would continue working with police and other partners across the criminal justice system to pursue similar cases.

“This kind of violence is entirely unacceptable, and the Crown Prosecution Service will work tirelessly – with the police and partners across the criminal justice system – to pursue cases like this, and prove that no one is above the law,” she said.
Brown and Akinlolu had denied charges relating to assault and grievous bodily harm. Brown also faced a charge of possessing an offensive weapon.
Those charges were subsequently dropped after the pair pleaded guilty to affray.
