WASHINGTON, DC: As the Democratic Party battles a leadership crisis with the rise of the socialist wing and its leaders defeating incumbents for as long as five terms, a democratic leader thinks now is the time for Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) to leave.

Chuck Schumer might face challenges in his pursuit of retaining power even if Democrats win the midterms in November.

Dem leader refuses to support Schumer if elected in Senate

During a Debate on Monday night, August 3, Rep Seth Moulton (D-Mass) said that he would not support Schumer as a party leader in the Senate if elected in the November midterms. Seth Moulton is contesting in a heated primary against incumbent Sen Ed Markey (D-Mass).

"The first vote that I take when I get to the United States Senate will be for not Senator Schumer, because we need new leadership at the top as well," Moulton said.

Moulton was referring to the process to select the Senate’s party leaders, which usually takes place after the November election.

Markey also did not directly support Schumer for the leadership position during the debate. However, he has backed Schumer in the past. When asked about his support for Schumer, Markey’s campaign pointed to his comments during the debate.

"We need a big debate about new leadership in the Senate – the direction of the Senate," Markey said.

Democratic runners for Massachusetts seat distance themselves from Schumer

Both democrats who are facing each other in Massachusetts' Senate seat have distanced themselves from party leader Chuck Schumer, highlighting the growing discontent inside the party.

"If you think the Democratic establishment is winning for Massachusetts, if you think it's fine that the Democratic establishment has allowed a second term of Donald Trump, then vote for the status quo," Moulton said during the debate.

While Schumer is not running for re-election until 2028, he would have to gain the confidence of his fellow Senate Democrats every two years in the internal leadership race to make a case for why he should stay at the helm.

However, Sen Chris Murphy (D-Conn) wants Schumer to remain in the leadership position.

"Well, I think we are united right now as a caucus. There’s always a lot of focus on Senator Schumer and [House Minority] Leader Jeffries," Murphy said during an interview in March when asked if he supported Schumer, who he said had a "tough job."
