NEW YORK CITY: In the glittering holiday episode of 'Saturday Night Live', the uproarious tradition of Colin Jost and Michael Che’s joke swap took center stage on Weekend Update.

Embracing the spirit of chaos and surprise, the hosts crafted jabs and punchlines for each other, daringly delivered live without any prior glimpses. However, this year's exchange pushed the boundaries of irreverence to an unprecedented level.

Colin Jost and Michael Che's audacious joke swap

From the onset, the joke swap set an unapologetically audacious tone. Che’s opening joke for Jost targeted former president Barack Obama, labeling him “a dodo I’d like to reintroduce to Africa.” This was in reference to reports of a scientific plan for the revival of the extinct bird.

Jost found himself navigating a labyrinth of discomfort, humorously commenting on the Adult Survivors Act in New York, a law enabling victims of sexual abuse to file claims within a limited timeframe. Reluctantly, he quipped, “Figures, ’cause bitches love bringing up old stuff, am I right?”

In a pointed skewering, Che steered Jost toward teasing his own wife, Scarlett Johansson. The jibe revolved around New York's permission to serve alcohol in theaters, leading Jost to quip, “That’s how I’m finally able to enjoy my wife’s little art movies.”

Not stopping there, Che added more for Jost by making him compare Johansson to Coretta Scott King in a racial joke. “If you ask me, you’re an even better Black Widow than Coretta Scott King,” Jost said while clearly uncomfortable.

A very awkward climax

The relentless banter climaxed with a jaw-dropping moment when Che aimed a quip at both Muslims and Jews, proclaiming, “y’all need Jesus.” This audacious declaration surfaced amid a stream of jokes, one after another, igniting laughter and shock among the audience.

The crescendo of discomfort arose when Che, acknowledging the somber holiday season amid conflicts in Israel and Gaza, expressed hesitance about culminating with grim humor. Yet, Jost seized the opportunity to thrust one final rib-tickler into the mix for Che.

“Whether you’re Jewish or Muslim, y’all need Jesus,” Che chuckled with an air of both amusement and embarrassment.
