WASHINGTON, DC: CNN anchor Dana Bash asked Sen JD Vance (R-OH) about Donald Trump’s military deferments during the Vietnam War. This confrontation occurred after Vance criticized Tim Walz, who is Vice President Kamala Harris' running mate, over Walz’s service record in the National Guard.

Trump received multiple military draft deferments during the Vietnam War, citing various reasons including foot issues and educational commitments.

This followed criticism directed at Walz for his previous claims of having carried weapons in combat, which were inaccurate. Although Walz served in the Army National Guard for 24 years and was deployed to Italy in support of the Afghanistan war effort, he did not experience combat during his service.

Bash asked, “Donald Trump didn’t serve in the military. He received a medical draft deferment for bone spurs to avoid serving in the Vietnam War, reportedly as a favor to his father. Do you find that shameful, too?”

Vance responded, “I think that Donald Trump didn’t serve in the military, but he didn’t lie about it. Dana, I’ve known Donald Trump for a long time. You don’t think he honors or you think he had been for my service? Donald Trump didn’t lie about serving in the military. He didn’t say that he went to Vietnam when he didn’t. This is the problem."

"I don’t criticize anybody whether they served our country or not. I think it’s honorable to serve. But obviously a lot of people have reasons for not serving. I criticize somebody for embellishing their record for lying, saying, I went to war. Did it. Do you think that it’s a problem that he said, I went to war, but he didn’t? Actually, that seems to be a problem to me," he added.

Social media reactions

Amid the ongoing political discourse, social media users have voiced a range of reactions to recent controversies.

One user wrote, "Vance has been reduced to defending a man he called America's Hitler."

Another user commented, "Timid Walz has to defend Kamala's open border policies that let in 12 million illegals who have raped-murdered and stolen from innocent Americans."

One user commneted, "Walz did not lie. It is downright scary how these right wingers have no regard for the truth and have become experts at the Gobbels rule.

Tell a big enough lie often enough and people will believe it. Just imagine what these liars are going to throw at us when Harris wins in November."

Another replied, "Yeah, Shady Vance did. Glad you agree."

One user added, "Walz is helping Harris, but Vance is not helping Trump; not helping him at all."

Another stated, "Vance should be ashamed for his Stolen Glamour."
