WASHINGTON, DC: President Joe Biden was in damage control mode when he sat down with ABC News anchor George Stephanopoulos for an interview on Friday, July 5. He intended to allay fears among Democrats and assure them that he was the best candidate to take on presumptive GOP nominee Donald Trump in the upcoming general election.

The abysmal performance of the incumbent in the first presidential debate against Trump on June 27 had led to growing voices calling upon Biden to step away from the race. According to NBC News, the recent interview did little to assure those who believe Biden's candidacy is beyond repair.

More than half a dozen Democrats in Congress reportedly slammed the political situation in which Biden had put himself after the interview, using terms such as "heartbroken,” “doomed” and a “f***ing disaster.”

Comments made by Democratic leaders behind the scenes

While Rep Angie Craig (D-Minn) became the first front-line Democrat to call for President Joe Biden to “step aside for the next generation of leadership" on Saturday, July 6, others addressed the issue anonymously.

A Democratic lawmaker said of Biden's interview, "It made me sad. Completely out of touch with reality and insulated from the truth." The lawmaker assured that they would break their silence on his political future “soon”.

A senior aide to another frontline Democratic congressman reportedly told NBC News that there had been discussions about front-line Democrats raising their concerns directly to the President in a public letter. They were waiting for the Congress to be in session to get together in Washington, DC.

“Front-liners are all pissed, and they are personally ready to pull the trigger to ask Biden to step aside, but politically they are scared s**tless,” revealed the aide.

“Denial of the problem is not a solution or a path forward to convincing our constituents that he has the capacity or the vision for four more years,” expressed a House Democrat, as another colleague of their colleague shared, "We are desperate to protect our democracy and we truly want him to have the grace that comes with beating Trump in 2020 and deciding to pass the baton."

During the interview, Biden had demurred when asked if he was willing to take a cognitive assessment and release the results, which is "an issue," according to a House Democrat.

"Opinions are hardening in many quarters that action has to be taken and that action is a different nominee,” stated another.

Internet blame Democrats for Joe Biden's reelection bid

Netizens blamed the Democrats for the political situation in the party while reacting to the news on the website of the Daily Mail.

"This crash in the Democrat party is a long time coming," wrote one social media user.

"We are doomed if he gets re-elected again. Keep him on the ballot. Trump will make history for a second term. It's high time the Democrats learn their lesson," stated another.

"They fear he will sink the entire Democratic ticket. And he will. They really don't have any good options period. And all of this has been and is rightfully earned and deserved," wrote one person.

"It's hard to argue he shouldn't be a candidate for presidency without arguing he shouldn't be president. Dems deserve this conundrum," added another.

"This is what you get when your party fails to keep the bench refreshed," one individual said.
