'Did Disney ever sue us over that': John Oliver playfully taunts with cheeky Mickey Mouse teaser
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: As of January 1, 2024, the iconic Mickey Mouse, famously depicted as Steamboat Willie, entered the public domain, signaling a significant shift in the way the beloved character can be utilized.
With the expiration of its copyright, individuals are now free to employ Mickey's likeness in its original black and white, un-gloved form without fear of legal repercussions from Disney.
Despite Disney's efforts to prolong the copyright of Steamboat Willie, the inevitable occurred, granting the public unprecedented freedom to incorporate Mickey Mouse into various expressions of creativity.
John Oliver pushes boundaries
Notably, comedian John Oliver recently seized this opportunity during a promotional stint for his show, 'Last Week Tonight'.
Oliver, known for his witty banter, featured Mickey Mouse as Steamboat Willie in promotional material for the show's return on February 18th.
Accompanying the image was a daring caption: "What are they gonna do, sue?" Oliver playfully taunted Disney, asserting, "We’re back February 18th, and we’re pretty sure this was an okay way to let you know about it!! Ya, probably fine." However, the daring move has left some Disney enthusiasts feeling uneasy.
John Oliver's precedent-setting move
According to Deadline, 'Last Week Tonight' had already tested the waters by featuring Steamboat Willie in their last show of 2023, on December 17th, just before the copyright expiration.
In that instance, Oliver even pushed boundaries by adding humorous commentary with Mickey saying unexpected and uncensored lines. Surprisingly, Disney did not pursue legal action.
During the show, Oliver cheekily inquired, "Did Disney ever sue us over that?" To which Mickey responded negatively, prompting Oliver to contemplate the newfound freedom, asking, "So, should we take that as a green light that we could do whatever we want in the future?" Mickey's uncharacteristic response left the audience in awe, as he boldly exclaimed, "I don’t see why the f*** not."
Mickey's unconventional journey into new genres
This isn't the first instance, and likely won't be the last, of Mickey Mouse as Steamboat Willie being utilized in unconventional ways.
As the public domain status opens the door to creative liberties, Mickey is set to make appearances in unexpected genres, including a horror movie and game.
AdultSwim has also harnessed the freedom to use Mickey in a suggestive YouTube video, signaling a new era where the boundaries of Mickey's image are continuously tested, much to the chagrin of traditional Mickey enthusiasts.
