'Brought it on himself': Internet shreds Dr Anthony Fauci for revealing his family received threats after Covid-19 origin coverup claims

WASHINGTON, DC: Doctor Anthony Fauci, the former director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, testified at a House subcommittee hearing regarding the US's Covid-19 pandemic response and the virus origin, on Monday, June 3.

During his testimony, Dr Fauci revealed the continued threats he and his family receive that are worrisome and troublesome.

This marked his first public testimony since leaving the federal government.  During the more than three-hour hearing, Dr Fauci detailed the harassment and credible death threats he faced while serving as the director.

"Everything from harassments from emails, texts, letters of myself, my wife, my three daughters," Dr Fauci responded when Democratic Rep Debbie Dingell asked about the nature of these threats.



 

"There have been credible death threats leading to the arrest of two individuals – and credible death threats means someone who clearly was on their way to kill me. And it’s required my having protective services essentially all the time," he said according to CNN.

Dr Fauci’s testimony comes during a heated election cycle, with Republicans criticizing his handling of the pandemic, including mask mandates, vaccine guidelines, and the origins of the virus.

The former medical chief stressed the deep impact these threats had on his family. “It is very troublesome to me, it is much more troublesome because they’ve involved my wife and three daughters," he said.

Dr Fauci, who served for five decades before retiring at the end of 2022, appeared voluntarily before the Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic.

He also expressed concern that the threats against public health workers during the Covid-19 pandemic could discourage talented individuals from entering the field.

"They say to themselves, 'I don’t want to go there. Why should I get involved in that?' They’re reluctant to put themselves and their family through what they see their colleagues being put through,” he testified.

Online reactions to Dr Fauci's testimony were harsh and unforgiving. Some users on social media platforms labeled him a "pathological liar" and accused him of bringing the threats upon himself.

One user on X (formerly Twitter) wrote, "He brought it on himself by advocating for faulty product to get rich..." Another commented, "Crocodile tears. Pathological liar of a man."

The vitriol continued with comments like, "He’s a soon to be convicted felon," and "He’s a modern day Hitler."

"He should be tried, convicted and hanged," wrote another. "He's crying because he knows he got caught," one more added. 

The backlash did not stop there. Another user harshly remarked, "I wouldn't care if it involved his entire family tree. This man did an untold amount of damage to America through his science-denying policies. This man must be thrown in Gitmo."
