Sheriff Grady Judd shares 911 audio recording of Emmanuel Espinazo
During a press briefing held on Monday, April 8, Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd presented a 911 audio recording wherein Emmanuel 'Manny' Espinoza, 21, purportedly admitted to fatally stabbing his mother, Elvia Espinoza, 46, in her residence on Saturday afternoon, April 6.
Emmanuel had informed his mother that as he was visiting his grandfather in Frostproof, he intended to visit her during the weekend. Sheriff Judd disclosed that Emmanuel 's mother extended an invitation for him to stay at her residence, which he accepted.
According to Sheriff Judd, Emmanuel arrived at his mother's residence around 2 pm, with ring camera footage capturing him holding a knife concealed behind his back moments before the assault.
Additionally, he was reportedly listening to the song 'No Church in the Wild' as he approached the front entrance.
"His beautiful mother, who was so excited to see her son, opened the door. The second she opened the door, he charged in and started stabbing her," Judd said.
While authorities did not release audio from inside the residence, it was stated that Elvia's cries of "Manny, Manny, Manny!" could be heard during the assault, while Emmanuel remained silent throughout.
"He made the statement that he knew where to stab her for maximum effect because of his biology classes," Judd remarked.
Describing Emmanuel as a "remarkably brilliant" individual, Sheriff Judd detailed that he allegedly stabbed his mother ‘in excess of 70 times’, continuing even as she attempted to defend herself.
"He said he noticed her hands were still moving, so he stabbed her some more. And then he told the detectives in his confession that he had cut his hand on the knife while stabbing his mother. And as he is standing at the kitchen sink, washing himself off and the knife, he wanted to ask his mom for the Neosporin, for the cut on his hand, but he noticed she was dead," Judd recounted.
Sheriff Grady Judd reveals Emmanuel planned to 'kill' mom for years
Sheriff Judd said Emmanuel called 911 right away after confirming that his mother was dead, and he played the audio for the press.
In the audio, Emmanuel admitted to the murder and then Judd said, "I want you to understand she was really the perfect mom. I want you to understand she was very proud of his accomplishments. And then I want you to understand that he viciously murdered her and confessed to it."
Investigators asked Emmanuel if he loved his mother and if there were any problems.
"We asked, 'Do you love her?' and he said, 'Yes, I love her.' We asked, 'Do you get along?' and he said, And he said ‘Yea, an 8 out of 10, we get along, but 'I’ve wanted to kill her for years and I made up my mind when I drove from Gainesville, today is the day,'" Judd said.
The sheriff said Emmanuel never had drug or alcohol problems or mental health issues, and he never had any trouble with the law.
Emmanuel was the youngest of Elvia's three children and was the top student in his Frostproof graduating class of 2020.
Judd claimed, "He was quoted at his high school graduation saying, ‘High school was just one of the chapters out of the many we will have throughout our lives. We still have so much to accomplish in the future that will define what kind of legacy the class of 2020 will leave behind'."
Detectives searched Emmanuel's room at the University of Florida and didn't find anything that showed he planned to kill his mother.
"It is one of the most bizarre murders that we have dealt with in a very long time," Judd said.
