The suspect was positioned just a few between 300 and 500 yards away from Trump when the agents intervened.

The shots fired by the Secret Service agents caused Routh to flee the scene.

However, he was later apprehended. The rifle, a scope, and a GoPro camera were recovered from the scene.

In the aftermath of the Pennsylvania incident where a man named Thomas Matthew Crooks fired shots at Trump and injured the former president during a campaign rally on July 14, 2024, Eric Trump expressed his dissatisfaction with the security measures in place.

“Somebody let him down – as his son, I’m not very happy about it,” he said, adding, “It was a failure, even though $3 billion was spent behind it.”

Security concerns ahead of November elections

With two assassination attempts against Donald Trump occurring within a short span, security concerns around the Republican presidential candidate have intensified as he continues his campaign for the presidency.

Voicing his concerns about the effectiveness of the Secret Service's protection, Eric reflected on how close both attempts came to succeeding.

“Those 48 hours could have been very different. He’s doing great, he’s out campaigning,” he told The Guardian.

Ryan Routh's motive behind the alleged assassination attempt against Donald Trump

According to officials, the FBI is leading the investigation and is working to determine a motive behind the planned attack.

Authorities noted that Routh's social media activity echoed anti-Trump rhetoric and expressed concerns about threats to democracy.

“We know this suspect has posted about Trump being a danger to democracy,” said former FBI official Chris Swecker.

Routh has a history of run-ins with the law, including an hours-long standoff with police in 2002.

The alleged assassin has been previously convicted of carrying a "weapon of mass destruction," as per online records.
