Fact Check: Are ships listed 'Lake America' being blocked from passing through Welland Canal?

WASHINGTON, DC: After US President Donald Trump ordered Lake Ontario to be renamed “Lake America,” a new claim began circulating online amid growing tensions between the US and Canada. 

Social media users claimed that ships using the Canadian Welland Canal were being denied passage if their documents referred to the lake by its new US name. Let’s fact-check the claim.

Claim: Ships with 'Lake America' in their documents are being blocked

In late August 2026, a rumor spread online claiming that Canadian officials were blocking ships from passing through the Welland Canal, which connects Lake Erie and Lake Ontario.

The claim said ships were being denied passage if their documents listed “Lake America” instead of “Lake Ontario.”

The rumor surfaced after Trump ordered US agencies to refer to Lake Ontario as “Lake America.” Posts on X, Threads, Facebook and Reddit claimed that Fox News had reported the alleged blockade.

“FOX News: Dozens of ships bound for 'Lake America' have piled up at the entrance to the Welland Canal,” an August 29, 2026, Facebook post claimed. “Canada is refusing to grant them permission to proceed. Ships that list 'Lake Ontario' in their documents are passing through the canal without obstruction.”

The post included a map showing the Welland Canal running through Canada’s Niagara Peninsula and connecting Lake Erie with Lake Ontario. Trump’s order applies to US government agencies, which were directed to use the name “Lake America.”

Fact Check: The claim is false

The claim is false. Searches of Fox News’ website found no evidence that the outlet reported the alleged blockade. Google searches also found no credible news reports confirming the claim.

The St Lawrence Seaway Management Corporation oversees ship traffic on the Canadian side of the Welland Canal.

The corporation said vessels were using the canal as usual and that the alleged dispute over the lake’s name had not affected operations. “Seaway operations are continuing normally and have done so throughout the weekend. Vessels are transiting the Welland Canal as usual,” a spokesperson said.

The earliest version of the claim appears to have come from an August 28, 2026, X post by a Russian-language account that describes itself as “Comedian.” Earlier versions of the claim shared in English also identified the post as satire or acknowledged its satirical origin.
