JACKSON PARK, CHICAGO: After the opening of the Presidential Center dedicated to former President Barack Obama, a rumor is circulating on social media platforms claiming that the Obama Center has been shut down by the order of a federal judge over unpaid liens. The claim has garnered questions and speculation, with many calling for a fact-check.

Amid the disputes involving subcontractors filing mechanic's liens for millions in unpaid invoices on the Chicago project, though the Obama Foundation says it fully paid, a viral post on X has claimed that a federal judge has closed the Obama Center until all construction liens have been satisfied.

The post, which has garnered more than a hundred thousand views as of this writing, has drawn criticisms and mockery against the former president, suggesting that many believe the claim to be true. Meanwhile, a few others appeared to remain skeptical and questioned the authenticity of the post.

The claim, however, is false, as there are credible evidence or major updates in the controversies surrounding unpaid liens.

Given Obama’s popularity in US politics, the claim would have made headlines if it were true. A search on Google for the claim yielded no credible reports by prominent news media outlets, suggesting that the claim is baseless.

Additionally, the account that made the claim is not credible and has shared similar fake and unverified claims for the sake of engagement.

A fact check by X’s AI assistant Grok stated, “The claim is false. No federal judge has closed the Obama Presidential Center over construction liens. While some subcontractors have filed mechanic’s liens alleging unpaid work, there is no court order halting operations or requiring closure until payments are resolved.”

The $850 million Obama Presidential Center officially opened on June 19 after more than a decade of planning and construction, and is located in Jackson Park on Chicago's South Side; the campus sits near the University of Chicago and the Griffin Museum of Science and Industry.

Chicago was selected as the site for the presidential center in 2015 and later chose Jackson Park as its location, as the park is listed on the National Register of Historic Places; the proposal underwent an extensive federal review.

The project also faced legal challenges from the Chicago-based nonprofit Protect Our Parks, which sought to stop construction at the historic site, but the lawsuits were ultimately dismissed, allowing the project to move forward to completion.
