WASHINGTON, DC: Amid growing political attention ahead of the US midterm elections, a claim has gone viral that Senator Darline Graham said she never wanted to become a senator and made a controversial remark about her late brother, Lindsey Graham.

Darline Graham reportedly entered the Senate following her brother's death in July 2026.

On July 13, South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster appointed her to fill the Senate vacancy and serve the remainder of her brother's term. But did she really make these remarks, or is the viral quote misleading? Let's fact-check the claim.

Claim: Darline Graham said she never wanted to become a Senator

A claim circulated on social media that Darline Graham, the South Carolina senator who filled the vacancy left by her brother Lindsey Graham's death in July, said she never wanted to become a senator.

The claim also attributed the following statement to her: “When I get to heaven one day, I am just going to choke Lindsey.”

An archived X post sharing the alleged quote had received nearly one million views at the time of writing. Other users also shared the claim on Facebook and Bluesky.

The post sparked criticism and debate among social media users. One X user claimed that Darline Graham blamed her late brother for putting her in a position where she had to run for the Senate. The user also criticised her over her views on women's reproductive rights.

Another user argued that Graham could have refused the opportunity to become a senator, while another accused her of playing the victim despite having the option to step away from the race.

These reactions show how quickly the alleged statement spread and sparked debate across social media.

Fact Check: The claim is false

The claim contains both true and false information. Darline Graham did remark that she wanted to choke her late brother, Lindsey Graham, during a radio interview on October 28. However, there is no evidence that she ever said she did not want to be a senator.

In fact, Graham reportedly said at a campaign event the previous day that she actually loved her job in the Senate. Her comment about wanting to choke her brother appeared to express frustration over her sudden appointment and the difficult election campaign that followed his unexpected death.

During an interview with local radio station WYRD-FM, one of the interviewers asked Graham whether she sometimes felt angry with Lindsey for putting her in such a difficult position. She made the choking remark while answering that question.

Reports found no evidence that Graham ever directly said she did not want to become a senator. If she had made such a statement, major news outlets would likely have reported it, especially given the attention surrounding her Senate campaign.

Her campaign to retain her Senate seat has also drawn attention amid the 2026 midterm elections, as the Republican Party faces challenges in maintaining voter support. South Carolina last elected a Democratic senator in 2005, when Ernest F. Hollings left office.
