WASHINGTON, DC: Amid the controversy surrounding TV networks’ refusal to broadcast President Donald Trump’s primetime address, a rumor is circulating on social media platforms claiming that the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has fined the networks for their refusal. The claim has sparked outrage and concerns, requiring a fact-check of the claim.

Claim: Federal Communications Commission fined ABC, NBC, and CBS

According to the claim that surfaced on X,  the FCC has finalized massive fines against the major networks for refusing to carry President Trump’s address. ABC and NBC each got hit with $25 million, while CBS received a $10 million fine for cutting out early.

The post alleged that, according to agency insiders, the FCC has wanted to clamp down on this behavior for years.

The post asserts that broadcast networks receive access to publicly licensed airwaves and therefore have a civic duty to keep Americans informed by carrying presidential addresses.

It claims that President Trump directed the FCC to uphold this duty, arguing that networks cannot pick and choose which presidents to cover since they serve the public, not just the Democratic Party.

The post ends by saying that networks must either pay the supposed fines or face losing their broadcast licenses.

Fact Check: False, FCC imposed no such fines

However, the claim is false, as there are no reports of the FCC imposing fines on ABC, NBC, and CBS for refusing to air Trump's address on July 16.

There are no publicly available statements, announcements, or press releases from the agency that support the claim. There are also no announcements from the above-mentioned networks condemning the fines.

A search on Google for the claim yielded no credible reports by prominent news media outlets, except for the reports of Trump calling for their broadcast licenses to be revoked.

Grok fact-checked the claim, stating, “The claim is false. The FCC has not fined ABC or NBC $25 million each, or CBS $10 million, for their handling of President Trump's July 16, 2026 address."

"While ABC and NBC skipped linear broadcast and CBS cut away early, sparking criticism from Trump and comments from FCC Chair Brendan Carr about public-interest obligations, no such fines have been issued.”

In his primetime speech, Trump announced the release of newly declassified intelligence documents, which, according to him, show China carried out a coordinated campaign to influence the 2020 US election and prevent his return to the White House.

But the claim contradicts the official intelligence assessments, which concluded there were no indications that any foreign government altered the technical aspects of the 2020 presidential election, including voter registrations, ballots, vote tabulation, or certified results.
