WASHINGTON, DC: A viral social media post claimed that FIFA instructed Spain's players not to let President Donald Trump touch the 2026 FIFA World Cup trophy after their victory over Argentina.

The claim is the latest in a series of rumors involving Trump that have circulated since he attended the 2026 FIFA World Cup final alongside FIFA President Gianni Infantino. Earlier viral posts falsely claimed that Spanish players had awkward interactions with Trump, with some relying on edited or misleading clips to support the narrative. Here's a fact-check of the latest claim.

Claim: FIFA officials ordered Spain's players not to let Trump touch 2026 World Cup trophy

A rumor circulating on social media claimed that FIFA officials instructed Spain's players "under no circumstances" to let President Donald Trump hold or touch the 2026 FIFA World Cup trophy after it was presented to the team's captain, allegedly to prevent him from walking away with it.

The X post reported, "All the Spanish players at the World Cup were reportedly directed by a FIFA official to 'under no circumstances let Donald Trump hold or touch the trophy' after it was awarded on the stage to Spain's captain to ensure he couldn’t walk away with it."

The rumor gained momentum as Trump attended the 2026 FIFA World Cup final alongside FIFA President Gianni Infantino and played a visible role in the post-match medal and trophy presentation.

His presence on the podium sparked widespread discussion online, with clips from the victory ceremony generating millions of views.

In the days after the final, social media users circulated misleading and edited videos alleging that Spanish players snubbed Trump, avoided shaking his hand, or appeared uncomfortable during the ceremony.

Other posts falsely suggested FIFA had changed its protocols because of Trump. These claims fueled renewed scrutiny of the trophy presentation

Fact Check: False, no evidence supports claim

The claim is false. It originated from @HalfwayPost, an X account that describes its content as "halfway true comedy" rather than factual reporting.

There is no evidence that FIFA officials instructed Spain's players not to let President Donald Trump hold or touch the 2026 FIFA World Cup trophy.

The rumor appears to satirize Trump's appearance at the 2026 FIFA World Cup final on July 19, where Spain defeated Argentina 1-0.

Trump joined FIFA President Gianni Infantino in presenting the trophy to Spain captain Rodri and remained on the stage as the team celebrated.

Footage of Trump lingering during the trophy celebration circulated widely online, with some clips showing Infantino appearing to gesture for him to step aside.

Trump was also absent from some official celebration photos, fueling further online speculation. The viral post exaggerated these real events into a fictional story that FIFA had secretly instructed Spanish players to keep Trump away from the trophy to prevent him from "walking away with it."

However, no credible reports, official FIFA statements, or footage from the ceremony support the claim. The rumor is a satirical fabrication based on a real moment from the victory ceremony.
