Fact Check: Did Gen Randy George say Trump should be hospitalized for mental unfitness?

WASHINGTON, DC: A social media post claiming that retired Army Chief of Staff Gen Randy George said President Donald Trump should be hospitalized because of his mental fitness has sparked reactions online.

The post, shared on X, drew attention amid ongoing online discussions about Trump's mental fitness and leadership. It also led users to question whether George actually made the statement.

Claim: Randy George allegedly said President Donald Trump should be hospitalized

An X post claims that Randy George said President Donald Trump “should be hospitalized immediately” and questioned his mental fitness shortly after announcing his resignation. 

The post included a static split image of Trump and George and attributed the following statement to George: “Donald Trump should be hospitalized immediately; I doubt his mental fitness. He is leading the U.S. military toward disaster.”

The post received more than 2.8 million views within a few hours. Several users debated the quote and questioned whether George actually made the statement. One commenter asked, “Is this a fake post?” Another user also questioned whether the claim was true.

The claim appeared amid renewed online discussions about Trump’s mental fitness in September 2026. Psychiatrists and commentators, including Dr. Bandy Lee, had publicly raised concerns about

Trump’s mental state and cited some of his recent public remarks and behavior. These discussions kept questions about presidential capacity and the 25th Amendment in the news cycle. The fabricated military quote gained attention in the same environment, making it important for users to verify the claim before sharing it.

Fact Check: False

The claim is false. The quote attributed to Randy George is fabricated and has circulated in nearly identical versions as a social media hoax. 

Reports found no credible news reports or other reliable evidence showing that George made the statement about President Donald Trump’s mental fitness or called for his hospitalization.

The post also gets George’s former position wrong. George served as the 41st Chief of Staff of the US Army from 2023 until April 2026. He was not the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

The post also falsely claims that George had just announced his resignation. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth asked George to step down and retire effective immediately on April 2, 2026.

Multiple reports confirmed his departure at the time. Therefore, the claim that George made the statement one hour after announcing his resignation does not match the timeline of his departure.

The fact-check reports also found that a nearly identical version of the claim circulated on Threads on September 6, 2026. That post falsely described George as the Joint Chiefs chairman and claimed he had resigned.

The September 24, 2026 post appears to recycle the same false claim with slightly different wording. The post also uses a static image of Trump and George, but the image does not provide evidence that George made the alleged remarks.
